Just ordered my...
« on: July 18, 2011, 02:27:49 PM »
...new Handi in .30-30, YAHOO! It should be in by the end of the week. I asked my dealer to get a synthetic stock but I'm not sure if they're available for the .30-30. We'll see.

Congrats!! You can always swap the stock out for what you want if it doesn't come that way.  ;)

There are some synthetic sets in the classifieds. You can order them online from a few different places too.

Ok, update time.
I didn't order the .30-30 after all, I opted for the .45-70. My dealer informed me the .30-30 isn't available in synthetic stock, so I bought th big bore and will send it of for a .30-30 barrel, along with the .50 cal muzzleloader.
That was my original plan, withthe hopre being I could order all three barres at once. My dealer informed me that couldn't be done, apparently H&R doesn't offer that. Seems silly to me but whatever.
My dealer told me the turnaround time was 6-8 weeks and I was afraid of missing out on coyote/hog season so I decided to get the .30-30, regardeless of stock type.
Well, when the dealer ordered my gun he ordered the .45-70 synth like we originally talked about. Apparently he'd forgotten our conversation about the .30-30. So instead of cancelling the .45-70 and ordering the .30-30,  took this as a sign that I am destined to own the big bore. ;)
Sooo, I'll be picking it up Saturday and shipping it out next week sometime.  Can't wait to get it!

You should have stuck with the 30-30. Synthetic stock sets are a dime a dozen and very easy to find. I wouldn't let the dealer decide which gun I was getting. ;)

You're right about that Pete. I've had several 30-30's and 45-70's and every one's been a good shooter.  ;D

My dealer didn't deicde what I bought. I originally wanted the .45-70, but changed my mind to have it in time for the 2011 coyote season. I have no intention of hunting coyotes, but pigs. In the WMA where I'm going to hunt pigs you have to use a weapon that is legal for whatever season you happen to be in, and you can't hunt coyote with anything over .30 cal.
My original intent was to have the .45-70 serve as my foul weather gun, hence the synth stock. This was originally discussed with my dealer, and that's what stuck in his head.
When I first talked to my dealer I'd intended to get the .45-70 and order two extra barrels ,one in .30-30 and one in .50 cal muzzleloader, and I still do. I just got a little nervous when I was told about the 6 week turnaround time. I was also surprised to hear I can't get them all on the original order, appaently H&R doesn't do that. I figured it was like a car, you order it with the options you want and that's that. Not the case.
So you see, everything is going to work out for the best. I may be a little late getting into the coyote/pig season, but ultimately I'm going to be happier because I'm  getting the synth stock I wanted in the first place.

If the barrel is in stock the turnaround times are nowhere near 6 weeks. Alot of guys have been getting them back in 2-3 weeks door to door. :)  There have been a few cases of poor packaging from the factory but hopefully that's been rectified.

Im starting to think I might as well go straight from .22 RFs to the 45-70 (loaded to any of several performance levels) and just skip the stuff in between.
I predict you are going to like it a lot.

Oh yes, I have no doubt I'll be happy with them. I did quite a bit of research on the Handi's before I decided to take the plunge, and everything I could find on them leads me to believe they are a well built, accurate, firearm. No bells & whistles, just a solid, reliable performer. Exactly what I want.
