Drilling stock refinishing
« on: July 20, 2011, 07:32:53 AM »
I am looking at refinishing the stock on a 1936 Sauer drilling.  Is this a do it your self job or should I shell out the $300 to have is done by an expert?

thanks

Dougk,

How bad is the stock? Does the checkering need to be recut? these & several more questions need to be answered like any dings in the stock or just finish wear? You really have not given enough info to make a informed decision.

If there is only minor wear and no deep dings in the wood, I have saved several gunstocks by applying Pledge spray wax with orange oil to the stock with a soft rag several times a day for a few weeks. Actually the straight orange oil works best if you can find it. Just rub the whole gun down a couple times a day and alow to dry between coats. Imperfections in the finish will blend together & it produces a nice finish.

I think this will appeal to the "Mr Scrouge" side of your personality. Then if you don't like it send it off for a professional refinish.

So, let me get this straight....  Someone who "didn't know what they were doing" refinished your stock and you don't like how it looks!  Now, your question is, "can someone who doesn't know what they are doing refinish my stock???"     ha ha ha

Hold the Phone DM

I found the guy here in Austin.  He has done drilling stocks and stock work is his specialty...

Oh to be clear I was not going to mess with the stock...  Wood is not my thing....  :o

But DM thanks fr catching and pointing out the humor in the question....
