Survivior .223 or .308

Do any of you have any experience with the Survivor model in either .223 Rem or .308 WCF? Tried the search but came up empty. Are they as good as the other models?

Yep, both are excellent IMO.  Both are good performers.  If shooting a lot from a bench, the survivor stock may get uncomfortable in 308....(no recoil pad), but since the 308 is not that bad, it is an accumulative thing with me.  I have a .223 stocked with the survivor, and it is a perfect setup for me.

My first H&r\NEF was a survivor in 223. I chose it because of the survior stock. I love pistol grip stocks. It shot great with white box winchester ammo. Another thing that I liked was the matt finish. I have since sold this rifle to my uncle and replaced it with an ultra with fluted berrel. As good as the other models? In one word yes.

One thing I don't understand about the survivor is why they put heavy barrels on them.  It seems to me standard contour would be better on a camp/backpack/utility rifle to keep the weight down.  I think it would be great with a Talo Trapper barrel in .357 Maximum.  A cut down Topper barrel would be even better.  I may just have to put together another .357.  Anyone know when it will stop?

It's to counter balance the weight of all the stuff you cram in the stock that should be in your fanny pack where the weight is on you body and easy to carry and not on your hands/arms!  ::) At least that's my feelings on the matter.  ;D

I have a Survivor chambered in 223Rem. It is one of the newer guns(2003) that has a 1:9 twist bbl. It was bought second hand as the regular Survivor, and modified by me. The forearm stayed although I relieved where it touched the bbl at the forward point. I installed a piece of hard plastic there to contact the bbl. When the forearm screw is torqued to 30in lbs it puts tension on the forearm and will shoot 1 hole ragged groups at 50yds with the Black Hills 60gr NosPart's.


The stock has been replaced by a youth plastic stock and the bbl has been chopped to 18 inches. I replaced all the extractor/ejector parts with new ones from NEF. The OAL of the gun is a mear 31 inches and handles like a dream. I have a set of Weaver medium rings with a Leupold 2-7X33 Turkey Plex scope.


This will be my closer range hog slayer. A "long" shot at my club is 100yds. --- SAWMAN

I am liking it. Think it is next. The .223 Rem seems like a good bet. Of course, I can always send it back and get an additional barrel I think.
