Harley-Davidson to build bikes in India

November 04, 2010|By Sara Sidner, CNN

The iconic American motorcycle brand, Harley-Davidson, has announced plans to build an assembly plant in India.

Harley-Davidson, the iconic American motorcycle brand with a cult-like following, has announced it has chosen to build its second assembly plant ever outside the United States in India.

The "complete knock down" plant or CKD is expected to be up and running in the northern Indian state of Haryana in first half of 2011. Parts made in America will be put together for the Indian market in Haryana.

"What we are doing is made in USA, assembled in India, which will have a positive job effect back home which is why we are driving this investment as quickly as we are," Anoop Prakash managing director for Harley Davidson India told CNN.

A Buell is built using a Harley Davidson Sportster engine, and were sold at HD dealerships.  They are, by the way, no longer made.....To many twits buying them, I guess..... :)

At least it isn't in China, small consolation only. :(

According to your write up the Indian assembly plant will assemble HD motorcycles to sell in India. Looks like HD is just trying to expand their global market... not assemble overseas to sell in the USA.  ;)

Give it time, some of it will find its way back to the USA or other offshore places.

i am well aware of the past, present, and future of buell; as well as harley.  i have owned and worked on my own bikes my entire life, so i really am not too worried about impressing other wannabe bikers that bought a bike and a personality 5 years ago.  90% of the turds riding harleys now dont ride them, can not change their own oil, wont stop to help another cyclist on the side of the road, and sure as hell dont have half the experience i do concerning motorcycles.   they are not people i want to know or associate with.  i dont hang out at the local hd shop playing the role and buying the latest accessory to come out...but that is just me.   just today i saw some s***bird that just bought a bike, cut off some pedistrians (the woman was pushing a stroller with a newborn in it) on his way to no where trying to look bad while getting there....what a dope.   sadly, i see more of that than not anymore.
i'm not sure if the "too many twits buying them" was a malicious statement toward me or not, as of now i am taking it as a tongue in cheek remark.    as far as them using a harley davidson engine, kinda.  it is derived from a sportster engine, however it is HIGHLY modified to the point that the outside is about the only thing you would recognize were you to strip them down and do a parts comparison.
@  tm7   they are using an engine designed by erik now being made by rotax, and within the next year they plan on releasing a new line of AMERICAN motorcycles, without the mettling fingers of the moronic harley execs screwing everything up.     ;D

I don't ride bikes but I have used tractors most of my life . Fords were once made in England , M F in India and many others in Japan and other places . OSHA AND EPA along with unions are forcing our jobs to other places . Its like Browning A5's I had 3 the best one as far as fit and finish was made in Japan .

I think that was a tossup between those two and both types viberated to rattle your fillings. The HD boiled the passengers calves and butt and caused early hearing loss.

@ tm7....they are back.  they are selling the new 1190's, at a price tag of 40k.   word is they are making 100 of them to raise money to fund a new line of production bikes.  there are plans to build more affordable bikes for the mainstream market.   there will be an off/on road model, a race model and an streetfighter model all similar to the ulysis, firebolt, and lightning respectively.    it is exciting to see what erik will come up with without the restrictions of harley around his neck.

India has been manufacturing tractors and industrial stationary engines for years . HD's should not present any great challenge to their engineers.

Perhaps being built in India will inject some quality into them, I doubt it could hurt.

I ride a Harley, wrench a Harley and would and have stopped traffic to help a downed rider on what ever the hell they were riding. Most of the twits and wannabees are on metrics whether it be a cruiser or sport.  Now that is said I agree there are too many RUB Harley owners out there without a clue and are just prey to the salesmen venturing into their lair.  I always liked a Buell but $40 k  not that much.   I do not want to ride a Haji Davidson though.

Sadly there are only 2 companies that build attractive bikes.  That would be Harley and Triumph.  The rest are hideous and cheap.  A Buell is a Harley.  If Harley wants to assemble bikes to sell in India and create American jobs in the process then I think that's great.  They once imported Italian bikes and sold them as Harleys.  Indian imported British bikes and sold them as Indians.

LOL.   By cheap, do you mean that they cost half as much but last three times as long?

If any one really believes this statement "Sadly there are only 2 companies that build attractive bikes.  That would be Harley and Triumph". They need to seriously consider getting a seeing eye dog! The most beautiful bikes have come out of Italy! I am not making that statment as a personal obsevation, although I agree with it, but from a design perspective. If asked, motorcycle and automotive designers will give you the same answer.

I mean cheap looking.  I've seem many bikes made in Italy but none that were attractive.  BMWs don't make me want to poke my eyes out.  Norton, Enfield, and BSA made some nice looking bikes.  Honda's vertical twins were not to ugly.  The Japs just can't make a nice looking V-Twin.

I disagree.  The Sabre's of a few years ago (don't know about the current model) were very sharp.  Sort of like a Fatboy, without that ugly transmission stiking out a foot.

my newest harley is a 97 electra glide. i think one of the last years to have a carb on it in the glide.thats about as new as a plan to go. in fact if i turn loose of it i plan to get a nice shovel like i had in the old days.made in india, no thank you!if harley wants to expand its product sales im all for it.the economy here is goin to make it hard to sell high end bikes in the us.lots of what we think of as 3rd world countries now have a emerging upper class and who can blame them for wanting to ride the finest iron they can purchase.some of yu can flame me about which or what bike will last longer or is cheaper but they still aint a hog.

I've owned 6 Harleys and they all performed flawlessly.  Riding a Honda is like dating a fat chick.  It's a lotta fun but you don't want your friends to see you.

each to his own for sure! ive rode both types of bikes and still do.harleys may not be the fastest or the most reliable but they have personality.the  newer ones dont and this is what confuses a lot of people.its just to hard to explain, we dont ride them because of how it makes us look, but how it makes us feel. a thumpin vintage hog under you, the badlands in yur rear view mirror and sturgis in front of your windshield. nobody else around. tell me how yu feel?those of yu who have been there know what im sayin. those who aint will never know.now im talkin about real bikers not rich urban bikers or ones who purchased a harley last year.and dont get me wrong i like the vintage jap bikes, they are finely crafted machines and hold up well.jus sayin.

jeez, a real biker could care less about image.thats actually what makes them a real biker.a real biker could care less what yu or anybody else thinks.he lives his own life the way he sees fit and yu can kiss his butt if yu dont like it.thats just the way i see it.
