New bolt required for rebarrel from 22-250 to 308?
« on: July 21, 2011, 06:34:35 AM »
I am considering re-barreling a 700 VS from 22-250 to 308 to be used for long range shooting.  Would that caliber switch require anything besides a new barrel?  Thank you all for the info.

The .22/250 and .308 Winchester case have the same case head size, no change is necessary to the bolt face or extractor if the new round is a .308 Winchester.

You did not state however which .308 case you will be changing to.   If it is a belted magnum .308 then the bolt face will need to be opened up and the extractor modified.   And the .22/250 length action may not be long enough for the round.

Wow, thank you all for the timely and accurate info.  Sorry for not being specific about the 308 cartridge but, it would be the straight 308 Winchester with the intended use as F class and/or 500-800 yard target (only) shooting.

No change, just a new barrel.
