Brass Being Overworked\loose chamber?
« on: January 03, 2004, 07:21:04 AM »
I had a case split on my 96 Mauser yestarday. This is sporterzed with a Shilen barrel on it and it was shooting real sweet. The load was  44.7 of 4831SC for a velocity of 2557fps. and the other at 45.7 grains, Hodgdon shows 47 as max. I beleive this was only the second maybe third firing at most, I lost track. I was just getting ready to reload for it and took some measurements. When the initial sizing is done it is sizing it down .011 which sounds excessive to me, or is it? Once sized down then the bullet seated I am coming up with .002 neck tension which sounds good to me. So is the .011 oversized normal for the fired brass, it just sounds excessive to me?

Thanks PD

..........That seems excessive to me also..you are talking about the neck expansion above the loaded neck aren't you......I would look to another brand of brass to get a larger loaded diameter...some brands are thin and don't work well in some chambers.....and IF Shilen did the chambering I'm supprised at the large chamber in your brass is normal?.....or did someone else do the chamber work on a Shilen barrel.........and in a magazine round or hunting type round I really perfer more than .002 tension on a bullet......but your load/gun may perfer a light fit and if it works and you don't get bullet setback then that is great......you might have to end up just living with it if you can't find some thicker necked wall brass and anneal the brass to avoid a lot of early splits in the case......good luck and good shooting-loading!!

Thanks Buddy
It is sizing it down .011 from the fired case then growing .002 when the bullet is seated. I had overlooked the possibility of getting thicker brass, excellent idea! Is there anopther case that I can neck down to produce this? I am running RP brass right now, are other thicker walled?

......You don't mention which caliber the gun is chambered in.....I was just going by the expandsion being too much for any cartridge and if you give the caliber I bet there is a case that it can be formed from and maybe someone who loads the caliber will have a different case brand in mind for thicker neck walls......and maybe that will solve the problem........you may have to do a little die work and expander ball tune but the fitted cases will have a longer life and might even be more accurate......again..good luck and good shooting-loading!!!
