This is a particularly stupid issue to get worked up about. So what if a word to describe a certain type of dust storm is Arabic? It isn't any kind of creeping PCism.

Do we stop using "monsoon" because it has its roots in Arabic? How about "admial?" And "algebra?"

How about sofa, mattress, syrup, jar...do we ditch those because they came into English from Arabic?

Exactly, and I'm exercising my protected First Amendment rights to get exercised about others getting exercised about a local weatherman trying to inject some color into an otherwise boring weather report by exercising his or maybe her First Amendment right to use a foreign word.

But, Christ on a pogo stick! Finding some eeeee...vvviiillll mohammedean plot in any use of an Arabic based word makes people sound like the paranoids that blame Bush or Palin for every hangnail, double yolked egg, run in pantyhose, and bad cup of coffee.

HEH, up til this thread I never heard a dust storm called anything but a dust storm, I had no idea the new made up pc name was arabic. Maybe we can come up with a more gentle pc name for tornado. POWDERMAN.

Yes, you were race baiting. There were NO posts in this thread making mention of black people. You brought it up for the apparent purpose of either inciting racial tensions or to cast doubts on someone's thoughts because of unrelated racial beliefs. That IS race baiting.

Actually, most of those came into English through the mohammedean occupation of Spain, and a few were picked up through the Crusades. So they came in well after the mohammedeans declared war on us.

First - I don't think I've engaged in 'race baiting', but we'd need to define race baiting. What, exactly, does that mean? I'd think it means using language meant to antagonize or people of a specific race... and I've not done that. 2nd.... race baiting - whatever that is? - is oft in the eye of the beholder. It could be that it doesn't have anything to do with race... or if it does, it's not baiting... or if it is, it's the acceptable kind of baiting, maybe, i some groups. I'm not sure which - what do you think, Casull? Here's one: calling people terms like spooks, crackers, or muzzies... race baiting, or not?

Back the thread subject of Muzzie linguistic assault... I'll bet if you check around a bit, the folks most inclined to be upset by the news story, are those who are a bit xenophobic. There's probably some antagonism towards Muslims, since the word in question is Arabic, and most Arabs are Muslims, and lots of peeps don't know the diff (and are prob inclined toward a broad brush).

Anyhow... there's this bit in the article:

Well Heck I live in Goodyear as well. I sure don't agree with the citizen of the world concept. I'm a citizen of the US first,then a proud Arizonan who will still call them dust storms not some new fangled word some reported discovered to make himself appear smarter than the local hicks.

I drove across northern Arizona a couple weeks ago. No haboobs, but it was some spectacularly beautiful country. The Grand Canyon was well worth the detour.
