Henry vs Mossberg lever 22
« on: July 23, 2011, 02:08:35 AM »
This could have gone in either rimfire or lever guns.  The coin toss goes to the rimfire forum.

I'm considering a 22 lever action.  The Henry has a good reputation around the web.  I see they switched over to metal parts from the previously plastic parts, which is nice.

Mossberg has jumped back into the lever gun market with a tradtional looking offering in 30-30 and in 22lr.  From what little I've seen, it looks like a good gun, but I haven't heard much feedback from actual owners.

The price nod goes to the Henry, which is about a hundred bucks less based on a quick gunbroker scan.  I know that my local shop will generally beat the gunbroker asking price on new guns, but the ratio of Henry vs Mossberg price will still be in favor of Henry.  That said, if the Mossy is better then maybe I should pony up and get it.

So: anybody here have actual experience with the Mossberg?  Maybe even experience with both?  Is the Mossy worth the extra money?  The newer Henrys still making people happy?  What else should I consider?

at one time mossberg made about the best barrels there was. but who knows what they make now.
if I were buying a new one it would be a henry, mainly because of those walnut stocks.

I've owned most of the various brands of .22 leverguns, over the years - currently owning two Henrys (a Standard H001 & a Frontier H001T Octagon) & a Winchester 9422XTR Magnum.

I handled & inspected a new Mossberg in a LGS last Christmas, with an eye toward buying one, and had no likeing for it's tang safety, walnut-stained hardwood stock, or workmanship.

Additionally, the rear barrel sight was a stamped-out P.O.S.

I Passed on the Mossy.
