Late evening fire

Pardon the poor quality.  $40 camera, low light at about 9 p.m.  Duncans Mills CA, Saturday, 16 July, 2011.

Full sized Griffin Gun.  5 1/3 oz. charge, Goex Cannon grade.  Friction primer ignition.

when I try to look at stuff it says I need to download a plugin.  I'll have my daughter look at it.
I wanted to see it because my 50 hawken was impressive at night with only 100gr..

Try right clicking on it, then select "Watch on Youtube."

try putting your cursor on the youtube logo, then just left click after it says watch on youtube.

It's a wide spot along Hwy. 116 just inland from Jenner.   ;D

Better description - from San Francisco take 101 North through Santa Rosa. Take the River Road exit on the N. side of town, go west for about 40 minutes, bearing right at the stop sign in Monte Rio.

And from there it is only about half an hour along Hwy. 1 - a drop dead gorgeous drive - to historic Fort Ross, the southernmost outpost of Russia in the Americas.

okay, she did it and I watched the cannon.  you can't help but like cannons.
was there any night battles in the civil war?  that would have been awesome to watch.

I participated in a very early (one hour before dawn) battle at a reenactment at Chickamauga several years back.  There were 55 full size cannon and 8000 soldiers on the field all firing at the same time.  The noise and flame in the predawn hours was an experience to remember.  I shot 55 lbs. of powder from my Parrott Rifle in two days using 12 oz. loads. :o

Bugeye, yes there were.  Masterpieces of confusion, from what I have read of them.

Zulu, only 74 rounds in two days?   ;)

We used to 8 oz charges, but to save money I have cut it back.  Still do the occasional full service charge though.  Usually for the first shot of a battle or maybe for the morning wake up gun.

Here is a time shot of some night fire in conjunction with fireworks at the Fresno Civil War Remembered a few years ago.

That was the first time we did that.  Last year we did a lot more.  Started off with the Federal guns firing by file, then we took it up, then the fireworks people set of their first round of shells.  Then the Federals fired, we took it up, fireworks did their second round.  Did that 8 times.  One thing that irks me about it is that the fireworks company got paid for it, our clubs didn't.  Including the Federals we had 15 guns, howitzers, and mortars firing.  The gun I commanded went through 5 pounds of powder and 8 primers for that.  Not a huge outlay for that gun, but not chum change either.

Pretty cool subjoe. After I let it play all the way through I then backed up the video slowly and got some good still shots of the cannons going off, AWESOME!  There is a lot missed when one watches it in normal speed.

I do like fireworks, but the cannon fire is more impressive to me.  with fireworks the concussion is way up in the air.    pretty,  but the cannon with the fire and concussion right on the ground where you can see it and feel it, now that looks like fun.

Last year we were about 70 yards from the pyrotechnics mortars, and their shells were bursting at maybe 200 to 300 feet.  We felt it.

just curious, why were the fireworks done by pros?  are they more dangerous than the cannons?

Well, I wouldn't want to be the one liable for calculating the lifting charge, fuse length, bursting charge, arrangement of the various pyrotechnic effect pellets, and such for a display near a crowd unless I was getting pretty good money for it.  And I'm not sure what California law is on displays like that.

I can't speak for California either, but I do know there are strict licensing and liability and bonding guidlines that have to be met for such displays in Ky.  I can only imagine what California regulations would be like.
