.358 Win Twist Rate
« on: July 24, 2011, 11:05:43 AM »
I am seriously considering a 357 MAG to 358 WIN rechamber for my H&R Handi rifle. Before we get too far, I will mention that it is on a SB2 frame and pressures will not be an issue. The current twist rate is 1:15½". What rifle bullet weight range will be optimal for this twist? I'm thinking  that 180-200gr bullets would probably be my best bet, but would like to shoot 225s also. Is it a matter of velocity? If so, I am less concerned especially since I don't like to hot-rod anything.  Big and slow is just fine by me!

Thanks, Dinny

Since a 1 in 16 twist is what Remington uses for the 35 Whelen the 1 in 15.5 twist should do fine with 225 gr. bullets at attainable 358 speeds. I bet even the round nosed 250 gr. bullets will work just fine also. My 2 favorite bullets for the 358 I had were the 200 gr. RNCL and the 250 gr. Speer. It was a Browning BLR and I don't know what twist it had.

Dinny, i shot the Saeco 245 FP sized .359 out of a 16" barrel with a 1-16" twist at  1100FPS it was still stabilized at 200 yards. If i had to do it over again, would of had a  215 to 230 gr mold made with a bigger meplat, but hindsight is 20/20.  Todd

My .358 Win in my rechambered 760 Remington pump has a 1-16" twist.  My custom .358 Win built on a Remington short actioned 700 is 1-14", and my Ruger Hawkeye .358 Win is also a 1-14".  Bullets from 180gr to 250gr shoot great in all my .358's regardless of
twist rate or speed.  No worries!
