Off Center Forend Fix
« on: July 25, 2011, 02:36:33 PM »
Seems like I'm in the Mr Fix-it mode lately, after fixing the synthetic forend, I decided to tackle the off center issue on the BC Carbine forend I bought second hand recently that's on my 405 Win, I noticed a gap between the spacer and the frame on one side, none on the other even tho the forend fits snug, this forend and a couple other walnut forends all appear to have the mounting hole drilled off center which makes the barrel off center in the forend channel. So I eye-balled what it would take to center it, mounted the forend in leather in the vise on my mill, chucked up a 3/8" end mill(a drill press would work too I think) centered the end mill in the existing hole, then moved the table over about .050" and made a new hole off center what I figured was enough to center the barrel.

Then I used a ½" drill to make a new countersink for the mounting screw, drilled it just a tad deeper than the original hole so it would center on the new hole. Then I cut a section of 30-30 brass, cut it in half so I had a "C" shaped shim, tapered the ends so it fits in the forend hole to keep the forend in place, pushed it in place and installed the screw, worked perfectly, all that's need now is to epoxy the shim in place and Tru-Oil the wood. I think this would work to tighten up the fit on the synthetic forend too.

What do you do if the receiver is off center not the forend. I have a receiver tryed 4 forends on it and all are off center .045, removed the plastic from the forend and put it up to the receiver still off .045. Three are pallet wood and one is synethicforend. Also 3 different barrels a 50 cal 7-08 and a 223. Kernbigo

Thanks John.  ;)

Kernbigo, Sounds to me like the underlug on the barrel may be the problem, not the frame, you didn't say you tried a different barrel on it. If there's a problem with the frame, send it to H&R, call and see about gettin it fixed if it is, I've got 50 H&Rs, none have that problem, at least not enough to be noticed.

Kernbigo, The way I interpret what you are saying it sounds like six o' one, half doz. of ta other..........that is, if you come at the problem from the 'front' like Tim has your frame may turn out to be fine. Several ways skin a cat...........
I have several where the spacer sits off to one side a bit. I used to get irked about it, now I mostly ignore it. One approach is to plug the forestock holes and refit the spacer. Sometimes the wood needs to be relieved first around the barrel to get it to shift over right. If the hole is off in the wood or the lug on the barrel is off this will translate to the spacer not sitting right as everything tries to torque into place. Once you figure out just what is 'off' you can tweak it. It may take a combination of things.
I decided to ignore it and go shoot....... ;D

tim i noticed this on my 45-70 tonight with the exact same problem haha. i wonder if NEF would replace the fore end? infact the barrel channel is off center also. ill take some pics and see what your solution might be. my issue might be if i try to center it, its gona be tight on one side of the receiver and loose on the other. as good as this gun shoots i aint lettin it outa my sight so sending it off isnt an option but a new forend may fix the problem.
notice the left side is thinner than the right

barrel toucing on the left, floating on the right

now im afraid if i center it that where the forearm rubs the action it will create a gap on the oposite side and rub hard on this one. i can remove material but i caint add it to the other side.

fun pic

Tim, you didn't make a "before" pic did you?

This should be added to the Fix's in the FAQ's.

Mine was similar to Teddy's, I had already sanded clearance on the "fat side", then just centering the mounting hole made everything right. I plan on putting it in the FAQs along with the adding of the synthetic forend fix.

Relocate the hole to the left side and sand the inside of the left side channel so it's not so fat, that's exactly the way mine was. The other option is to call H&R, but you may just end up with another forend just like it.

When I sight down the barrel with irons or look through a scope; I cannot see any gaps in the wood or off center mount holes. If it shoots good, leave it alone ;) Now if it has an accuracy problem, then it is 'nother whole issue.

Good Luck and Good Shooting.

Fixed!!!! i got to playing with it, the forearm that is, and i noticed the barrel lug may be a lil off center, also the barrel channel was a little off center. so when i took it down i noticed the 2 little screws holding the forearm spacer. LIGHTBULB. i loosened them enough that it could be moved but firm and slapped it back together. i was able to adjust the forearm to be centered then i traced the spacer on the back of the forearm with the tip of a knife. took it off , centerd in my traced lines, tigtned screws, slapped it back on, tightened forearm screw, and to my suprise i could slide a card to the lug with no resistance so its floated. <( my english teachers would be horrified by that run on) so ill see if it stays, it seems firm, the fit that is, but if it moves ill center it back and apply a dab of super NASA certified rocketship glue to the spacer and that should get er fixed.

I wish mine would be that easy.I wrote in yesterday about my problem. Today I got another receiver that I bought from a member and the 2 barrels and  4 different forend all fit on center on the new receiver. So my conclusion the receiver is off center. Kernbigo

Now that is interesting, K.....wonder if it is in the pivot or what??? This might be a clue as to some accuracy issues some have??? How did it shoot otherwise for you?

I bought it from a guy in cal. and he had both barrels factory fit 223 and 7-08.I puchased a 50cal muzzleloader barrel from a member and it shot .625 at 100 yrds even though it was offset by .045 Kernbigo
