Most accurate bullet for 8mm Mauser
« on: July 25, 2011, 04:36:31 PM »
I would like to hear opinions form others who have tried various bullets and weights in the 8mm as to what the most accurate has been. I have tried 125, 150, 170 175, and 220 grain bullets . So far the 220 grain Sierra BT has been most accurate, but I would like a softer recoiling load with less of a trajectory.

You could try 196gr. or Rem. 185gr.

Hopefully you are not shooting .323 bullets out of a .318 barrel

I thought bullets were supposed to be slightly oversized?

Just kidding, 0.323" out 0.323"

Havn't tried a large selection but so far the Sierra 175 grain has been most accurate from mine. They seemed to like the H-4895

It has been my experience that heaver bullets shoot best out of 8X57JS Mausers. The 180 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip and 200 gr Accubond with Varget for hunting and the 200 gr Sierra Match King with 42 grs. IMR 4064 averages around 2200 fps but it really accurate for paper punching. I have not tried the 195 Hornady but many say it is good also. If the recoil is getting to you get a Past recoil shield.

My sporter Mauser (Factory GEW 98 German barrel) LOVES a max load of 4064 and a 175 Sierra OR 170 Hornady RN... SUB1" groups!!

Not helping on the recoil aspect, but my k98 likes 200 gr sierra match kings. You might try one of those slip over recoil pads by limb saver, a shooter shield, or both. I think the new recoil pads will knock it down close to half now.

mcgiiver:  I have used the 195 gn Hornady round nose and the 200 gn Norma Accu-bond, both over the same charge of VihitaVuoriOy N140 for 2500'/sec+ from my Husqvarna M46 (Swedish made 98, 1946 manufacture) and both loads group to the same 1 hole 5 round group at 100m, and absolutely roll hogs right over and leave them drt.  You can probably do as well with the Remington 185 gn slug but I haven't tried any of them yet; don't see the need........

I used the 196 grain Norma softpoints for years, now that I can no longer get them have switched to the 196 grain RWS softpoints.  These are the most destructive bullets I have used on deer in thick cover.  At least equal to the 300 grain bullet out of my 45-70.  And they are very accurate from a 18" barrelled  Iranian Mauser Mannlicher under 1 inch at 100 yards for three shots.
These are .323 bullets for the S-bore 8 M/M barrels.   I have not seen any .318 bore bullets in years, If I had a .318 bore Mauser, I would have it rebarrelled to a more modern bullet type. Shame to waste a good action on a obsolete round.

I'll agree with chutesnreloads on this one.  They shoot great in my gun.  I use IMR 4064 powder, WIN cases, & CCI LR primers.  If I am really careful I can shoot 1" groups at 100 yds. all day.

I started out using Hornady's 150 gr. spitzers, which shot okay, but recovered bullets always shed their jackets and came all to pieces.  I never experienced this problem after switching to the Sierra 175 grainers - perfect mushrooms every time and stayed intact too.
