What Ring Size?
« on: July 26, 2011, 02:32:57 PM »
Will medium rings work for a 40mm obj or will the hammer/spur be in the way?

What brand and model scope do you plan to use? Not all of them are the same dimensions.

Thanks, Dinny

None of my Handi's will sit any scope on low rings without the hammer getting in the way.  Most require high rings but then again that depends on the brand of rings and positioning of the scope.  Some manufactures medium rings are as high as high rings of other brands and vice versa.  At the very least I think you will need medium rings and most likely high rings.

Leupold VX1 in medium Burris Signature Zee rings, no hammer modification required, the rings are .270" from the top of the scope rail to the bottom of the scope tube, equal to a lot of low rings of other mfr.  ;)

Well, no the Burris medium rings aren't closer to some low rings of other brands but if the OP wants to gamble with a $50+ set of rings, it's his money.  Weaver medium rings are at .334 and would give him better clearence, especially if he needs to position the scope a little further forward which it appears by your picture you can't do.   Point is, each individual will position the scope a little different depending on their preference for eye relief.  So the Burris rings may work and then again they may not.  BTW, the Weaver low rings are at .195    ;)

Burris Signature Zees are $32-$35, unfortunately they don't come in low, for low rings I use their standard Zee ring which are $23-$25 and much lower at .130". I've got at least 20 H&R rifles mounted with medium Sig Zees, they works just fine, you can easily gain a little clearance by removing the tip of the hammer spur that is above the hammer extension, doesn't take much work at all to make a big difference and not end up with a ridiculously high mounted scope which high rings do a great job of.  ::)

Actually, there's lots of room above the hammer when you consider that you probably can't mount the scope far enough forward without moving the rear ring, here's a pic without the hammer extension.

Also, I just happen to have a VX1 4-12x40 on my 25-06 Ultra, mounted in low(.112") Leupold Rifleman rings, with the tip of the hammer spur removed for clearance.  8)
