New Crime Fighting Device: What do you think?
« on: July 27, 2011, 07:22:31 PM »
http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/07/27/facial-recognition-tech-to-fight-crime-stirs-controversy/

Basically, this a tool LEO's can attach to a smart phone to ID someone based on their eyes, face, or fingerprints.  I like the fingerprint idea, and think it's of sufficient scope to accomplish the task of the device and greatly improve LEO's ability to ID people.  My reasoning for singling out the fingerprint portion is that it requires contact and probably custody.  I think that the remote ability to ID people is a slippery slope.  This is maybe two steps away from camera's on lamp posts that ID gun owners, political outcasts, etc...  Real Life Big Brother stuff in the works.

What do you all think?

About finger prints, don't you have to either
1) Consent to having them taken, or
2) Be required to have them taken following an arrest
?

If that's the case, is there such formality in having your biometrics promiscuously scanned into databases notorious for being hacked? It seems like this would be one the ACLU might want to work on.

Yeah, I think that's pretty much it and is the reason I felt the fingerprint option posed the least threat in the long term.  That being said...all the schools in this county in Ohio, have a cute little crime fighting "dog" come out and finger print all of the kids unless you opt out.  You know...in case they are abducted at some point. *cough*  Chess vs. Checkers I guess.

We may already be air borne . There are cars with cameras that drive around checking lic numbers sending them to a computer base that checkes to see if the owner has missed payments to DMV , child support etc. Some cars ride thru parking lots others sit on the side of the road. Seems the gps points are sent also . Some camera the driver i was told but don't know. Also here if you drive a diesel on the interstate and other hwys the dot take a sound reading of your vehicle which is like a finger print as to ID the truck later. Toll booths and gas station cameras . most banks retail stores and gun shops . And my favorite vanity lic plated . Add gps you register and cell phones . SOME ONE knows where we all are . We got gps on company phones . The user can cut it off they think . the office can cut it on and they don't know .
We have had wives get mad when we refused to give them the code to check on husbans.

saw a program once where a gps tracker was put on a murderers truck to find the body and nail him.
but, he was already the prime suspect.  if you're not in any kind of investigation, then the constitution should come into play.

I'm not sure if this is sarcasm or not, lol.  It's hard to tell in text.  I'll answer at face value.

I doubt any lost kids are found by their fingerprints.  They may be ID'd by them after they've already been found, but not actually located or saved.  Answered differently: About as many as are found by dental records.

so where is the line ?

That's the million dollar question. The one that used to be answered by the US Constitution and is now answered by network TV and opinion polls.  What a lot of folks don't realize is that the US Constitution was set up to save us from "We the People" as much as from any individual tyrant.

Wylieky, no sarcasm.  just saying that I've never heard of one being found that way.
I'm against any kind of tagging by any agency unless I've committed a crime.

Sounds like freedom-fighting, under the guise of crime fighting (kind of like gun control, under the guise of crime control)
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.
