Med Range Sights
« on: July 29, 2011, 10:12:09 AM »
Hi,
I need some opinions on sights.

Some of these as you well know are REALLY pricey.

The Shaver ones or the ones that Shiloh offers are ~ $385.   :o

What are these like:

Any other ideas that I should check out?

Thanks!!!

The worst thing in you can do is get cheap with your rear sight. Even .001 wobble in the rear sight will give you a flier at best and a miss at the worst at distances greater than 100 yds.
MVA, Kelley, Baldwin, Distant Thunder , and the new Red River sights are all well made.

Stuart, Plus 1 for Ranch's advice.  Vernier sights are a long term investment.  The old saying applies to these ... Pay Me Now or Pay Me Later.  Spend the extra hundred + dollars ... once

My first Sharps rifle was an import reproduction and it came with a tang sight. That flip flop sight, I did everything I could to tighten it up so it would shoot straight, well the rifle is still hanging on the wall and the sight is still out in the weeds after fighting it for about two weeks.
Spend you money once and get a good one. A rifle is only as good as the sight on it.
Dont go were the path leads,go were there is no path and leave a trail.

Forgot to mention that for a "budget" sight, the Heilman sight is very good. I have one that I've shot all summer on 2 rifles and am quite happy with it.

Hello, Stuart C.  I notice this with modern rifle buyers also..they think nothing of spending big bucks on a nice rifle..but balk at spending decent money for a good quality scope..Never made any sense to me..you can't hit what you can't see..and you want it to be repeatable!  Mike Venturino said a good quality vernier tang & globe front was about the equilivant to a 1X scope.. I have tang & globe fronts that far exceed the cost of a high end Leupold..average joe's at range are shocked..Me, Hell, I know they are pricy..I had to have the patience to do without to save up for e'm..But I know I wouldn't be satisfied with lesser quality.

Those Armi Sport ones aren't too useful. The Pedersoli soule ones are not too bad, actually pretty good and Brownells has them. But the above mentioned ones are even better.

I use a MVA #108 Mid-Range Sharps Vernier.  I think it's plenty of sight for silhouette.  When I was ready to buy, I called MVA and spoke with a nice lady there.  I told her what I wanted to do, and she helped me find a sight that would meet my needs.  Part of my requirements was that I wanted something that was "period correct".  That's why I went with the Sharps vernier rather than a Soule.  If I just wanted a target sight, I'd go with the Soule.  It's much better suited to that type of work.  My local club only shoots out to 200 yds, so I don't need a lot of sight, but I still know the value of getting a good one.  You most certainly get what you pay for.
