LET'S CONSIDER OUROWSELVES FORTUNATE
« on: July 30, 2011, 05:26:08 AM »
Theree weeks without a gunshop---I am not talking about little shops that trade in airsofts--is akin to being a junkie without a source.
Boy did I miss my fix.
Europe is fun and wonderful--I will trade all their castles and catherderals for one good gunshop.
While, on the subject, I met one couple from California, who were Obama converts---that was an interesting conversation--they finally left the table mad and completely frustrated. It ended with her asking me if I thought that everbody in America deserved free medical. It flabbbergasted them when I said NO!
I digress.
I will have to do with fondeling my own for a day or two until I feel up to making a trip over to Collectors.
What a wonderful nation we have---if we can keep it.
Blessings

William,
I hope you get your " fix" soon!
Watch out for Collectors Arms, that can become a habit.
While you were in Europe was one of your stops in Austria? They have some pretty neat gun fireams in that country.

We lived in Europe for 9 years; I was stationed at Bitburg, Germany and at Zaragoza, Spain.  Germany had some wonderful gun shops if you could find then, and some outstanding gunsmiths. I lived in Spain while Franco was in charge, there were very few gun shops that I was aware of, at that time a Spaniard could only own three guns, (two shotguns and one rifle, no handguns) The guns had to be registered, and when the owner died the police came to the house and took them, they could not be passed on to anyone. When I left Germany upon being transferred to Spain the military shipped 87 guns to my father in the states, it took a mile of paperwork to get that done. Dad said it took the government customs agent that accompany the guns to his house over 4 hours to unpack and check the serial numbers on every gun before he would release them.

Since I was a registered international completive pistol shooter I could own five guns, two being pistols.  I had an opportunity to visit the police storage facility in Zaragoza and buy one gun while there; I didn’t buy on my first visit and was never invited back  :( :( :(

Europe is a nice place to visit, but I don’t want to live there again..

in the movie "From Russia With Love", the scene where James Bond is trying to elude a Russian helicopter. He has a very small attache case that he opens and inside is a breakdown rifle that he assembles in just a few seconds and shoots down the helicopter. It has been many many moons since I watched that movie and my memory may be a little vague on this but seems to me that the rifle was Austrian made. Can`t remember whether it was just a singleshot or not. But was a cool looking setup!

On one of my trips to Europe I attended a convention in Vienna, Austria, and on my taxi ride from the airport to the hotel, the taxi cab driver was showing various things about Vienna and one were the policeman who were armed with Steyr rifles. This trip was many years ago, but the driver told me that it was not hardly in the news at the time it happened, but the day that the terriost attacked the airport in Athens, Greece and killed all of those people. Also the same day the Austrian police intelligences had gotten word that another terriost group would attack the Vienna airport in the same fashion! Well the Austrian police setup and let the terriost enter the airport and then ambushed the terriost and killed all of them. The cab driver said all of the police were armed with Steyrs and the terriost were outgunned and paid the price.
One other neat thing I remember was to see , as I was landing and also taking off at the airport, the game blinds set up around the agriculture fields.

I noticed those game blinds all along the trip and wondered about them---wish No Guns Here would jump in on this little conversation.
I know there must be some gunshops but my investigation into where went nowhere. I asked about one in a airsoft/knife/sporting goods store but the man did not know of one.
Anywho, the trip was good.
Blessings

There was a Kettner gunshop right in the heart of downtown Vienna when I was last there in 2004. Kettner is a German company, and the largest gun vendor in Europe.

The primary gunbuilding location in Austria is in the town of Ferlach, where some of the finest high-end guns in the world are crafted.

Incidentally, my reason for being in Vienna was to meet a European guide friend who was going to drive us to Hungary, where I was to hunt Roe deer. I already had gun permits for Hungary.
As I landed in Vienna and headed to collect my luggage, I realized that I had forgotten I was going to drive across the country, but had not thought of getting Austrian gun permits. I was temporarily almost in a panic. Before approaching Customs, , I went to the Police station in the airport to tell my story, and there I got the good news: "Mr. O'Neill, that's no problem. A visitor can enter Austria with up to 3 guns with no paperwork. We like guns and hunting here...."

You can't do that in the U.S.! In general, though, everyon's comments above about gun ownership being more restricted in Europe are accurate.

In some parts of the USA, if you're a child, you can't even point your finger and pretend it's a gun!

Streak:  the rifle in that movie was a AR-7 22lr Survival rifle.  Bond did not shoot down the helicopter with it, he just shot the guy riding shotgun who was trying to drop grenades on him; he wounded the guy who then dropped the grenade on the floor of the helicopter, which subsequently blew up and crashed.  That move was almost as good as the scene when Bond ignited gasoline on the water as the 3 chase boats were closing in and all of them blew up and burned......
