Gary,
Sorry to hear this, I was hopefull they would be able to give some good results, like you said they are used to thin hollow forms which many times are cast in sections and then put together.... not something desirable in gun founding......
I am guessing that the Dolphin had more detail which was lost due to an excess of glass beading?

I am new and may not know what I am seeing or talking about but to me it looks like you received a very damaged piece not at all like what you wanted. Was this just an experiment and that is why you are accepting it as is? Is there any level of expected quality you can request from the foundry you end up using? In other words before they do the work you say you want a piece finished to be like <insert some spec> and show them an example of a quality cast cannon. Or is it expected that what comes from the foundry is rough and will require further work to be a finished product?

What I see is unacceptable.  I think you feel the same way. Make sure you share  your dissatisfaction with the folks at the  foundry.

While I do not know anything about the foundry in question, it is typical that the lowest man on the totem pole does the cleanup of the castings so unless they have an extraordinary man at that job, it is usually done lacking some care.  At this point, I think they need some educating as to what will pass muster with the customers.  They aren't selling most of these to an artist who expects to do some final finishing in person.

George ,you are correct they do need educating . I am not the man to educate them . I have already instructed two founderies and I am not going to take on another ...project.

Sorry to hear of the setbacks & dissapointments.
But; if ya keep going on it, I'd like to buy one.
And there ain't nothing wrong with you making a few bucks on these things too.

As long as the bore is more or less finished-
I can handle the fuse hole, outside, and base to complete the build on one.

I gather the radial lines around the bore are chatter marks.

Gary do you have any picture to post of the original test wax? to compare side by side with the finished piece.

I wanted to inform yous guys where this 'project' is at .

Today I got the uncast wax back from Wy.  ;D ,it is now at my casters along with the linstock peices .

The peice which will be cast is DD's and .....may or may not be used as a positive for a mold .

When this piece is cast I will contact  some local mold makers and see what is doable ?
Yes George those radial line are chatter marks . I never saw them in the wax , but there they are .

Yes DD I do have B4 pics back a page or two in this thread .

This all kind of reminds me of when I was working for Boeing... sometimes getting good acceptable quality parts from a vendor requires a lot of "hand holding".  In many instances you almost have to know more about the details of the technology than the vendor does themselves.

I think I speak for many of us in that we really appreciate Gary's efforts to make this successful.  And we are still looking forward hoping for success somewhere with someone.   Back in the day we used to spend days if not weeks on site with some vendors... Hopefully one of Gary's other casters can come up to it for all of us.

Thanks again Gary...

I couldn't agree more. I currently work with several machine shops that are suppliers to us. It's amazing how often some of them try to pass off sub-par work. Hand holding can be somewhat of an understatment, bottle feeding may be a better choice. That being said, Nice work Gary, we all appreciate your efforts.

I've been out for over 6 months and this is just what I need for a winter project.  I was looking at machining this very object as gifts for a small group of unique colleges.
I am earning a Master’s Degree in Explosives Engineering and I am the 6th or 7th to earn the degree, depends on who walks first this December.  We may not all get along but we are a very close group non-the-less.
If the price is right my goal is to make one for the first 10 graduates and for the professors and staff that have trained us and kept us safe.

Is that a Master of Arts or a Master of Science - I could see it being either depending ....

I assume much of the application for such is in mining and quarrying.

(The rest of the humor I'll skip as you've heard it all before.)

Masters of Science, Explosives Engineering.  Also completing my Masters of Mining Engineering also a Masters of Science.

The program had its genesis from the need of future blasters due to the high average age of those currently in the field.  Not that many decades ago one could purchase dynamite and caps from the co-op and learn by practicing.  Work as a powder monkey and learn on the job.  The current laws and regulations along with the shear size of many production mining shots make learning on the job pretty difficult.

I recall them days in the 60s, a case of 50 sticks 60/40 ditch dyn. was about $15.00, fuse 3 cents a foot, caps $1.00 a box, ditch dyn we could set off with a 22 hornet. Black blasting powder .35 a pound.

I remember going "fishing" one afternoon back 76 with a dozen or so sticks of dynamite - good memories!  ;)

the in-laws used to have a driven well, with a sand point that would rust shut and or clog with sediment every three years.  The easy solution was to pull the pump and motor, drop a 1/4 stick of dynamite down the pipe, and blow the point, pull the pipe re-attach a sand point, and new bottom section of pipe, and re-drive the well point into the newly opened cavity.

It is a shame that we can no longer get this stuff, back "in the day" it was just another tool.

Hmmmm.

My Dad learned the art of Dynomite working on the TVA in the CCC.

Ended up in metaphysics as a professor of philosophy.

I remember buying dynomite fuse as a teenager in 100' (two 50') coils at time from the local hardware store.  After the 3rd one they figured it out and cut me off.

I don't see a direct connection between a bronze cannon and wells and rocks, but we could try.  Revolution?  That is the TRADITIONAL use of cannons.  Not something I'd do; re-enact MAYBE.

Hello fellows this is an update .......these founderies work at a snails pace ! DD's mortar is 'scheduled' to be done at the casters Nov.4 ??? ....... believe me I feel your pain !

Of course it won't pick up any speed going to a 'moldmaker' for who knows how long ?

And Then you're back in the que for casting .........AGIAN :( :(  IF the wax pours go off without problems

I have ordered some wax and will try and kick this project in the butt .

BTW the way ,where do you guys get your dynomite ?  ;D
