Yes they will be marked US
This ones name is "Tater 24 lber"

At this point these photos all look about the same !

These two shots show how closley fitted the trunions and rim bases are .

Mike had some very good suggestions in the fittings of these parts .

I'm posting this pic that I took today to show everyone that Gary is still working on them and is obviously going for a batch production of four or five to be delivered to the bronze foundry when these waxes are complete. They are looking good and the special tooling is working correctly now that several improvements have been made.

We will see how these first castings go ,fingers crossed ....... The spud 24 went to the foundry on Mon. ,in a month is it will be ready ....!

My hat's off to both of you for figuring out a way to shape that piece accurately enough to form that close a fit with the profile of the barrel and trunnion. That's really going to aid in increasing the ease and uniformity of production.

Agreed John!! I don't know how they did it--magic, sorcery or photoshop, but what ever they did, they did it good. I was able to do it in Autocad.

I'd like to know how they did it, and if the technique could be applied to steel for a turned and machined tube. Please Gary share the magic!

I sent my bronze shaft mortar project out to a skilled metal worker. He came up with a much better plan than my make-do plan. He turned the breech end of the tube to a sphere & used the same size ball end mill to shape the seat in the trunion. I imagine you could do the same with wax.
I'll have more when I get the project back.

Sure that's how its done for the trunnion, but how do you do the two fillets?.

I think I might see how its done. The fillet is radius for the trunnion. The barrel is inlet to take the fillet.

I assume you mean the rimbases? There are three different curved surfaces on the rimbase. The easiest one mates with the trunnion, a plain cylinder. The other two mate with the breech; the upper portion is part of a cone and the lower portion is part of a sphere. The easiest way to deal with it is to machine a flat on the barrel and the curve for the trunnnion, attach it somehow (welding, epoxy, etc.), and then fill in the void between the rimbase and the barrel. Apply paint as necessary.

I was going to hold off on announcing this until everything is done. I decide to do it now, before I forget.

I have talked Dom into building handles in the Federal pattern for a base for this project.

Dom has told me these handles will be $35 a set of 4, plus postage of course. They will attach with 1/4" bolts.

Zulu, take another look at the drawing. It specifies a 5/16"(.312") hole Not a 5/32"(.156"). Therein lies your problem.
