Inexpensive / cheap O/U's

My son has been shooting since May and we are trying to find him "his own" gun. I want him to get an auto loader but he wants an O/U. The thing is, I can't justify buying a $1,000+ gun at this stage. I've been told by some, to stay away from cheap, foreign built O/U's. That they don't hold up to the constant use. But these guys shoot year round and have been for years. I can see Ryan shooting around 1,500 rounds a year but that's about it. Is there anything good about the Stoeger Condor, Stevens Goldwing or Mossberg Silver Reserve, besides the price? Any help would be appreciated.

I assume he's shooting trap, sporting clays or skeet? The ones you listed are mostly cheapo foreign imports. I'd take a look at the CZ o/u. I've shot my friends CZ canvas back and for a shot gun under $750 it is a well made gun and great handling. I myself bought a bob white cz S/S and I love it for hunting. Keep in mind the gun must fit him. Without the gun fitting him he's just going to fill the sky with a lot of lead.

Thanks for the reply. He's shooting Skeet and Sorting clays. I will look into the CZ's, I have not considered them yet.

Well he finally got his gun. A Benelli Nova 20 ga.. We didn't have luck finding a used O/U in his range ($400-550). So he was set to get an 870 but the minute he saw the Benelli, that's what he wanted. He likes it alot and figures he can use it for hunting as well as his Skeet league.

The stoger O/U are good but will wear out if you go hog wild shooting.  A friend went through three oif them all under warranty and they finally told him that they are not made to shoot a thousand rounds a month. 
My suggestion is you offer him the auto loader you are willing to buy him or the $ toward anyother gun he wants, he fills in the rest.
A reminton 1100 or 11-87 Used is about 400 new up to 700 depending on model.
If he really wants the O/U he will save up and apreachate it more as he paid for it.

Don't overlook used guns. In the past few months I picked up a Berretta 20 White Onyx and Browning 425 12 gauge, both for under 900 bucks. I looked long afn hard, but they are out there.

Too late now but you will not wear out a Baikal model 27 O/U so easily.. I have one that is at least 30 years old OK I don't shoot the shotgun that often but I brought it used. They may be basic in such things as frills like engraving but where it matters they are built to withstand Peasents use in Eastern Europe where the nearest gunshop let alone smith may be hundreds of miles away.


I do not know what the Remington retailed ones were like but the ones we get here have been good basic guns for over 60 years.

When buying an O/U it is important to buy one that blances well , for clay birds or bird hunting weight is also a factor. Style and fit also are important. Buying cheap is most often false economy IMHO. As offered before used can be the best deal if no evidence of alteration or action work is noted.
 Most people shooting clay target games that opt for a single bbl gun go auto as it takes some kick out and easier to stay on target.

I'll second this statement...take a close look at the CZ product line. They are very well made and will last you a life time. Also Consider the Remington Spartan...its another well made O/U. MY son shoots this in 12 gauge and he just loves it.

I would look for a good used gun.  I just went this route, I have been looking for several years for a good, reasonably priced o/u.  I finally struck gold, I picked up a Browning Citori for less then $700.  The metal is in excellent shape, the wood is about 85% but it only came with two chokes.  I couldn't be any happier, this is a much better gun than the "cheap" shotguns I had been looking at.
