I may of missed it but what are you guys putting into the wet cement in order to tie a ribbon to?
Are you just using bent wire or something a little stronger, say an eye bolt?

I just bought wire ties for rebar. It comes with a small loop in each end that will help keep it in the cement. I was planning to just bend the wire "U" shaped and shove the ends in an inch or so.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

If I was going to launch a rope or similar for some reason I would use an eye bolt but the ribbon will weigh in an ounce or so I don't need much.

Check out SOUP cans.  The exact size should of course be measured, but made of steel and the tops are routinely removed by the chef make them ideal.

There is more windage in my mortar and popcans are very loose in the bore. The little 4 oz. sliced mushroom and slice olived cans are a much better fit. The wire loop only needs to come up out of the cement about a 1/2 inch and I only fill the cans up to within a 1/4 inch of the top and tuck the streamer part way under the loop to hold it during ignition of the powder charge. When the can is in the air the streamer will unfurl on it's own. The smaller cans use less powder to go as far as the bigger 12 oz. cans.

With my cannon I've noticed that the streamer acts as a tail and stops the tumbling or whatever you want to call it. Once it unrolls it makes the can fly straighter, at least in my experiences.

I just cut the tops out of 16 cans with a Dremel tool using an 1/8" carbide burr.  Take less than a minute and gives excellent control of the cutting.  Will pour tomorrow and take a few pics to post.
