« on: August 06, 2011, 01:13:07 PM »
Can you shoot 22lr in 22 mag barrel  if you can shoot shorts in the 22 long rifle barrel whats the difference then shooting a 22lr in the 22 mag.

They are not the same diameter casing.  The mag is larger, and the LR case will split when fired.

Even then it won't be accurate and may well lead the barrel greatly.

22lr in 22 mag barrel has been done by several  including colt and ruger selling dual cylinders. normally the 22lr with its lead bullet will bump up and shoot ok,just like shooting cast bullets. remember 22lr is .223 and 22 mag is .224

Yes the LR is smaller and will split...
It also could very well STICK IN THE BARREL!!!  IMHO, NOT a good idea!

the lr is not going to stick in a mag barrel. i think probably the colt and ruger engineers know their business. in fact model 24 savage has been rechambered from lr to mag and has not given any problems using lead 22lr bullets, for me.

if you want a lower powered round in yur 22 mag pik up some 22 wrf shells.they will shoot just fine but may not feed in autoloaders.

No;  I don't think it will stick, but since the Mag is a slightly larger bore, the regular .22 will 'rattle' down the barrel.  The single-six I had was always more accurate with mags than with .22 LR.  To me, it would seem that any round which rattles or skids down a barrel is more likely to produce leading.

exact diameter should produce better accuracy, that was the norm for the dual cylinder rimfires. .001 difference will not exactly "rattle" and did not as a rule produce excessive leading, this could vary from  barrel to barrel. my colt new frontier never had a problem and it fact i still have it. i got rid of the ruger simply out of preference for the colt, do not shoot a 22 pistol enough to justify, for me, the colt and a k-22 s&w are enough in rimfire revolvers. i do like the ruger centerfire in both single and double, but that strays from this thread. i am not meaning to put down anyone's thoughts, just trying to set forth the facts i have learned.

DD,
RE-read OPs post.. Not talking about barrels diameter here... We are talking chambers and INCORRECT calibers fired from them. Remember a 22LR is a LO pressure cartridge. (24K)
Of coarse a 22LR re-chambered to a MAG would be just fine... That isn't the question. When the LR goes off, MOST of the pressure used to push the bullet out of the bore is expended filling the chamber and destroying the case, leaving little to push the snug fitting bullet out of the bore.  Remember it needs to engrave rifling as it goes.

I have been in the gun industry for many many years, I have driven MANY LR bullets out of magnum barrels...

I did a test with two 22mag barrels 10" and 21".  Jus to satisfy my curiosity.  Only 4 out of 100 cases  split. Accuracy was ok to 40 yards for body shots on gray squirrels.  They did not lead. Bullets expanded nicely to fill bore. However velocity dropped  about 250FPS cuz I chronoed them.   Most averaged  910 to 940 FPS. CCI Blazer, Rem T-bolts and WW Wildcats is the ammo I tested. The cases that split didnt spit any thing back at me. Wont use them unless i have no ammo for my 22 mag. Have fun and try for yourself if you want. Just make sure you clean chamber real good b4 going back to 22 mag.   Todd/ 3leg

I agree with the results achieved by 3leggedturtle. I have fired .22 LR's in .22 WMR chambers as an experiment and had very similar results. It is not something I would do all the time but my belief from my own test firings is if needed it can be safely done....<><.... :)

Get some Win Dynapoint 22Mags; there are a 'flash' plated 45gr. lead HP rated at about 1550fps and chrono about 1500 out of my UV. They go $7-8ish/50 around here and are a great step up in performance from the LR and leave you with the 'hot' full house mag loads in reserve (but you will have different points of impact).

I just wanted to mention that most of the 22LR bullets i measured, measured .222" not .223".  All the WMR i checked were .224".

I have had the same experience as 3leggedturtle and MSP Ret, but by accident.  My brother handed me his heritage arms .22 lr/.22mag with the mag cylinder in but loaded with LR.  Had some cases split, accuracy wasnt horrible at short distance.  Figured it out as I was ejecting the split cases and having to give them a bit more umph to get them out.  Wouldnt do it again unless I had to, but it was it interesting to see the results.

I shot some .22 out of an old Savage 22 mag, (don't remember the brand) got several split cases, but that old savage would feed the shells out of the clip and eject o.k. The extractor held the shell as it went into battery and as it ejected.
made some adapters out of fired 22 mag hulls, cut off the base with my dremel.
Them used a #1 wire gauge drill bit, which I twisted through the hulls by hand.
I then used a .22 cal wire cleaning brush to polish the insides of the hulls.
these worked fin but the "liner" would sometimes stay in the chamber after ejection, had to watch out for this and just slip another .22 in and go again. I suppose a person could stick one of these with some kind of temp glue in the chamber( or epoxy for a more permanent conversion)so it could be removed later. Never got around to testing beyond plinking cans(not to bad). ;)

I do kinda hate the thought of gluing that into a barrel marked 22 Mag, though.......
I know they cost more (about $7-8 /bx 50 bucks here), but those Win. Dynapoints are dandy in my maggie for lead bullet loads.
