I am moving back to Florida.
« on: August 06, 2011, 05:03:54 PM »
My wife of 18 years and I have split. I have decided to move back to Florida to a little town called Frenandina Beach. I lived there for many years and my next door neighbor was 45/70.gov from here on the forums. I am working 7 days a week rite now trying to save enough money to buy a travel trailer and to have at least $1,000 cash in my pocket when I make the move. The hardest part of this is my 15 year old daughter. She said to me that it seems I don,t want to be her dad anymore. I told her that that is not the case at all and that she means more to me than anything in the world. I also told her she has to see and understand why I am leaving. The work around that area dose not look to be that good so I will give it a couple weeks there to see if I can find some work. If I can't I will hook up the trailer and head further south. I am tired of the cold winters here in Pa and am looking forward to being around the beach again. I will miss the Groundhog hunting up here though. I also need to find a public range that has a back stop at least at 300 yards. As some of you know I quit drinking and my only demon now is smoking. Well you guys take care Dale

Sorry to here of your troubles Dale. Kids will be kids, that won't soothe your heart or hers, but they have no experience with what is happening and are only concerned with how this affects them. Rightly so I suppose...

Do your best to be near your daughter. At the same time you need to take care of yourself. Easy advice from an invisable friend a million cyber miles away. Keep the liquer away from this event, too many fall victim at this juncture.

Again sorry for your troubles.

Dale, lots of people are making the move to Florida, Tennessee, and Texas.  States with no income tax.  Depending on what part of the state you live in as to how high the property taxes are.  I spend my winters in Ft Lauderdale and Tampa.  Expensive to live in Ft Lauderdale or the Miami area.  Orlando is expensive too.  But Tampa is not as bad.  Have friends that live in Bushnell and the cost of living is very low there.

Good luck and keep in touch.  Rog

A lot of the "retirement money" has dried up in Florida. My son had to leave the "Sarasota, Tampa Bay" area because of that (boat rigger).  He is now working in the "casino damage area of Katrina" (laying floor and wall tyle) and keeping good work.

Stay in touch with your daughter. She is at an age where she will be most concerned with her "peer group". Talk to her as often as you can (every day if you can) to keep current with her history and send her some money, just a little when you can't afford it will help.

I hope you can hold off the bottle.

My heart goes out to you. Best of luck.  ear

I have always thought the climate in Pa was better than most. You have a hand full of days that seem to hot, and a hand full of days that seem to cold, but other than that it isn't to bad. Hope to have you back in Pa some day. Those 400 yard mowed hay fields will be calling.

I have no connections there but that is the type of place I am looking for. I never wanted a hurricane so bad in my life as of now. I know how that sounds but I would like to find a place that's has a lot of work and that normally means a hurricane or some other type of storm. I really don't want to see anyone hurt by such a storm but it is good for my type of business. I hope you guys understand what I am trying to say. The good thing about a travel trailer is I can pick up and follow the work. Just as long as it is warm. I am tired of freezing my ass off when it is 10 degrees and I am cutting a roof or building a new house. Dale

Ya know, I used to live for winter.  I love the ice and snow.  Trapping, snow machining, skiing, sleding, snow shoeing, all those things you needed snow for.  15, 20 below was my time to get out and enjoy the outdoors.  No longer.

Today I go to Florida when the temp drops below zero.  In fact I usually leave before that happens.  I don't come back till the temp is back up around 40 above.  I don't want to be here when it gets down to 30, 40, 50, 60, or even 70 below.  It hurts too much now that I'm old.

FL has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.  The hunting sucks too.

The hunting is good if you like hogs and turkey. Most of the WMA's in south & central FL have plenty of hogs, just have to put in your time trackin them down. GA. isn't far if you prefer Whitetail, they do have high fees for out of state hunters though.  >:(
And.....there is no better place for saltwater fishin in the US. Short ride across the stream (Gulfstream) and you are in fishin heaven (Bahamas).
It ain't no Alaskan summer but it ain't so bad down here ether. Welcome to FL we need more hunter types and less tree-huggers here.
EDIT: Swamp's right about the work down here, TX seems to be doing the best for employment opportunities.

Sourdough:

I used to live for winter too. Days in the high 60s and low 70s.  Nights in the 50s. Ahhh. Perfect. Then I moved to Minnesota and winter wasn't as much fun anymore.

Although I must say it's a great time to be outdoors in Minnesota because there's so little vegetation and no bugs. Now, as long as it's 10F or above, I'll go out and enjoy some hunting or scouting. But that's a poor substitute for Florida winters.

We're fixin' to leave the cold country after the kids are gone. Going south. But will need a place to get away for the summer. Seems like you've got some good things figured out. Whereabouts in Alaska are you finding it pleasant during summer? (I hunt and fish, life member of NRA, don't like California, and am not now nor have I ever been a tree-hugger, although I do advocate some clean water issues here in MN because of the threatened trout streams. Favorite rifle is a 375H&H. I might be compatible with Alaska for a few months out of the year.)

Best of luck Dale.  I am sorry to hear about the seperation (divorce) but you will learn to compensate.  As for your daughter keep in touch with her.  My ex did not let me see or communicate with my daughters for 14 years.  At least your daughter will understand in a few years- that is experience talking.

S happens we all know it, all suffer.
I say the older the harder but I believe you can make it, If you believe you can,

They are still repairing, that’s what I'm hearing. The thing here,we built so many so fast, all the money is in them. The bailed out banks are not helping no-one, its the"same Ole" "same-Ole" they make money or Blow you out the door.

Conan:  I spend the summers in North Pole, Alaska.  Nice warm sunny summer days.  Temps usually in the 60s, 70s, 80s and sometimes even into the 90s.  We've had a lot of rain this summer, more than normal, keeping the temps down into the 60s, more than usual.  The good thing about the rain is it keeps the forest fires, and smoke  down.    My Mother-In-Law moved up here in 1952, and she really fussed about the cold during the winters.  When asked why she stayed if she hated the cold so much, she said "Oh but the summers make up for it".

Having lived in both places, I'll take the summers up here, and winter in Florida.

Sourdough,

I grew up in Florida and now live in SE Alaska. I'm also facing retirement soon. Been thinking about just what your doing, summers in Alaska & winters on my frends ranch in centeral Florida. I'm looking for a big travel trailer to set up behind his house for the winters, and we'll spend summers in Anchorage with our kids there, except of course for the reds run on the Keni...... :o

One question, how do you get back & forth between Alaska & Florida? Do you fly & keep a vehicle in Florida. Thats what I'm thinking of doing. I already keep a vehicle in Anchorage for our visits there.  ;)

Thanks Sourdough and PastorP. We should probably link up somewhere in Florida sometime. I live part time on the panhandle.

I also feel like a jerk for having hijacked this thread with a question like mine. I forgot that the original post is a sad tale that hopefully has a happy ending. I'm sorry!
