Sounds to me like Dale probably needs a little diversion about now anyway.  ;)  If we all get down that way we can have a big BBQ and shootout.  :o  Last time I was out to the ranch we had 300yd range with gongs set up and 3 fish ponds.

Who knows might take Dale's mind off his domestic problems..

I don't mind at all about a hi-jacking of the thread. I am still working and saving enough to buy a travel trailer. I have found a lot of decent ones on Craigs List for about $2,000 and that is my goal. to buy one and leave here with a little cash in my pocket. I want a trailer so when I get there I won't be homeless so to speak. My only big worry is finding work at a decent wage. The money I have when I leave here won't last long if I can't find a decent job. Take care Dale

Dale, I can not say much about work in Florida.  Mt buddy in Ft Lauderdale runs a plastics shop.  He laid off two when the economy went bad two years ago.  Everyone else took a 10% pay cut.  Since then I think they have gotten back half of the pay cut (maybe the whole thing, I'm not sure)and no one else has been laid off.  Business is not booming, but Larry says "it's muddeling along".

My nephews were doing roofing in Lousianna, and Mississippi.  They have recently moved back to Georgia since the work has slowed in the New Orleans area.

I understand Texas is booming.  Lots of jobs there.  Businesses are moving to Texas and needing facilities built or renovated.

Now since Dale don't mind, I'll answer the questions I've been asked.

I fly back and forth, 4,000 miles is too far to drive.  I have a motorcycle that I leave down there.  It gives me the freedom to go and come as I please.  I have looked at buying a car or small truck, just have not found the right one yet.

Dale,

By the time I write this note, Irene has already battered your area and hopefully for you, there is work.

South Florida's job situation is in bad shape and due to government's cuts, starting with the new budget year (October 1st to September 30th), it is going to get a lot much worse.  People just haven't realized it.  The news media has been a little quite about all the mass layoffs that have been going on already.

Dale,

Just checking back to see how your move is progressing.  :) Get your trailer yet? You might even want to get your money together & buy a trailer in Florida. My friend down there tells me there are quite a few to choose from.  ;)

Anyhow just curious how plans are progressings.

I bought a 21 foot travel trailer today. I even got license plates for it today so it is all legal and all that good stuff. The only problem is it has been sitting for 5 years and 2 of the 4 tires are bad. I tried to fill them with air but the 1rst one would not hold air and the second one blew up while I was filling it. I took both of the bad tires and rims with me so I can get a couple new tires for it. I have been looking around on the Internet tonight to get an idea on what they might cost me. here is the problem. The tire size is 7.35x15 and I can't seem to find any that size. So can someone out there tell me what to do? I don't want to buy new rims and it seems that maybe they don't make that size tire any more. I also really don't want to buy 4 new tires if I can help it. So if there is a tire guy among you guys please advise me on what to do. I am still going to be here in Pa for a couple more weeks until; I can get some tires and save some more money for the trip. Thanks Dale

7.35-15 is the old standard designation used many years ago before the metric conversion.  Should be the same as 185-80-15 or 185-75-15 depending on the original profile.
BTW, be sure to get a tire with the proper load rating when using a trailer.

You can find out a lot about tire sizing from this link. Old Syko is correct, make sure you get a tire that will handle the weight of your trailer. Any reputable tire dealer should be able to fit you up with the right tires. JKB near Delmont, or Export tire in Export, or even Sears carry a good stock of tires and should have something that will work.

Good advise on how to find the correct replacement size.

If I were in your shoes I would grit my teeth and replace all four tires now. I'm not a gambler but I will bet money you don't get to Florida with any of the old tires. With two of them that bad the other two are just waiting for a little heat or a big bump to let go.

Exactly right oldandslow. I have seen guys try to scrimp on running old tires on their trailer, then end up with a nightmare on their trip.

Even when buying new tires always look to see when the tires were made. Sometimes tires can lay around a warehouse for years before they are sold. Just because the tires have not been run and appear new does not mean that the rubber has not deteriorated from age. Here is a link explaining where and how to determine when the tires were made.

That sounds like good advise.  ;) Work a extra week or two & buy a new set of tires. I've been there with running old tires and it's hard to find good deals on tires on the road in a unfamilure location.  :) Better to buy before you start out.

Have you checked out the wiring & brakes on the trailer yet?

The people I bought it from were the orinaginal owners and never really pulled it. they pretty much parked it and it sat there in a couple locations over the years. It only has a couple hundred miles on it at most. That would lead me to believe the brakes would be fine as long as they are not froze up from sitting witch I dought because the wheels I pulled spun freeley.  Dale

Listen to the tire advice Dale. I can not begin to tell you all the older campers and boats I see along side the road with what would appear to be tires with plenty of tread but the sidewall is blown out. Age is what kills camper tires, not miles.

While you are at it would not be a bad idea to check the wheel bearings for grease. Those brakes will come in very handy on long hills at speed, so make darn sure they are working.

I drive a semi and am no stranger to combination vehicles. I am always taken aback at how terrible it is to pull campers or anything for that matter with a passenger vehicle. I hate to see people broken down or broken up.

This would lead me to believe the working parts of the brakes are all rusted, corroded and non functional.  I assure you the bearings have nothing but grease  that is too hard to do any good also.  Without actually checking and repairing these things I wouldn't pull it more than across town.  Takes little time or money to do these things at home and hours or even days to do it on the road.

Good advice on the wheel bearings. The wheel may seem to spin freely, but add a load and heat they may not be long for the world. Take the bearings out, inspect them, clean them, and repack them. If this trailer was sitting as you say, I would never take a chance on running it a distance, without looking at the bearings. For what wheel bearings generally cost I would just put new ones in. A failed galled up wheel bearing can ruin your day. Maybe even a few days.

all the factory wheel bearings ive tore down always seemed to have a minimal amout of grease in them. i like to tear them down and grease them. and i like at least one set of spare bearings if im on a long trip.grease them up and put them in a zip lock bag.elec trailer brakes are nice  but ive pulled so many heavy trailers with no brakes its jus second nature to give myself a longer stopping distance.

Good luck Dale. Check out Chattanooga TN (southern auto corridor  http://www.southernautocorridor.com/ ) that place has been booming the last few years with the VW plant there. I was down there a while ago and they seem to be doing a lot of building.

Texas has been on my radar for some time. Every place I have thought about moving to is a gun friendly state. I would not even consider moving to CA or other states that have restrictions on guns. I hear Corpis Christy is nice. Take care Dale

Well for the first time in my life I am homeless. I have been sleeping in my truck for the last few days and it is getting old fast. I spent all my money buying that trailer and putting plates on it. Then my boss tells me we don't have any work for aweek. If I had known that I would not of bought the trailer yet. I have $20 bucks and a half tank of gas as I write this. I need to some how get some tires for this trailer and am hopping I will have some work in a couple days. I have been watching Craigslist like a hawk and have responded to at least 8 different adds for work with no calls back. DALE

ok call me cynical here, but I need to say this.  If you are working 7 days a week now to buy toys, why can't you stay where you are?  Seems there is work there. I see this more as an escape than a necessity.  More like a vacation to go scuba diving and playing.  Your daughter will be 18 in 3 years.  Stick it out for her.  You can not not run from everything the rest of your life.  Well you can but all you end up doing is running.
