My Second Custom
« on: August 07, 2011, 10:26:43 AM »
My first Custom was a 98 Mouser with a Douglas 243 barrel with a Bishop stock Timney trigger a real shooter, got stupid and sold it.
Went to a gunshow Friday wanting to trade my Judge Public Defender off, there was only 8 or nine dealers there. saw this bolt gun laying by itself asked about it, a 98 action Timney trigger Hogue stock Farrell scope base a no name 26" barrel( guy said it was a Wilson) in 308. Took it apart everything as he stated. Traded even bought some 308 reloads from a commercial reloader before I left took it out yesterday WOW less than 1" at 100 yds 2 times.
Look like someone was building a light target gun needs some bluing on the barrel and some smoothing but it will shoot.
Not all good guns are pretty
may finnish or may leave ugly

GOOD CATCH!!

I have built a few 98 Mauser's... The first was a GEW 98 the last ones all on the Argentine Mauser 98... A couple years after building my Whelen, I ran across a custom 98 made on a Argentine 98 action, chambered in 280 REM. Shilen barrel, I like, Same shroud I have used but an old Bishop Walnut stock. (I have used synthetics for all but one laminated) This was a old sporter, nice patina but very similar to mine. It had a then new VXIII 6x18 scope. I worked a deal where the store kept the scope and bought the 280 for a song!!  It too was a sub 1" shooter. Upon dis-assembly I found a Timney DLX trigger, nicely bedded action and barrel fitting a Douglas barrel. I was thrilled and still have that wonderful shooting rifle!

Good luck with yours!
