Tomato salad
« on: August 09, 2011, 12:18:58 PM »
Being the time of year for home grown tomato's. One way I really enjoy them is a tomato salad. I have been eating it every night since the tomatoes started to ripen. Just cut a couple of tomatoes up in a bowl. Add a fair amount of olive oil. I generally like a lighter olive oil. Add some red wine vinegar. Sprinkle in some basil, and garlic salt, & pepper. Gently stir. You can add sliced cucumber, and or onion if you want, its good with or without. I like to eat Italian bread with it. Dipping the bread in the oil and vinegar.  Great flavor!

Sounds good.  I've had the same thing made with cherry tomatos and little chunks of mozzerello cheese, but the home grown tomatos sound much better (haven't had any in a while and I miss them).

DDZ. Sounds darn good. I like to peel a fresh REAL tomato cut it up and add a can of tuna. Nothing like real tomatos from the garden. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Powderman, I do really like the taste of tomatoes in vinegar and oil, and the basil and garlic salt add to the flavor. Of coarse I use vinegar and oil as a dressing on any salad, so unless you like vinegar and oil as a dressing you may not like the tomato salad fixed this way, but I'm betting you will.
You are right. There is nothing like home grown tomatoes. Store bought tomatoes shipped from wherever are not even in the same ball park.

Sorry Bugeye, the only squirrel medicine I know of is a 12 gauge. A friend of mine had a red squirrel problem. He had to gradually pick them off with a shotgun and .22. The red squirrels can be as bad as having rats. They are very destructive.

Bugeye get you a box of  D-con rat killer and nail the boxes in the fork of trees. That will thin them out.

hmmm, they are rodents, so that might work.  and I think d-con also dehydrates them so they don' stink.  thanks

Peeled and sliced cukes, tomato wedges, mozzarella balls, a bit of green onion and some Italian dressing.  Simply marvelous.....

Tomatoes cut into wedges, some lemon juice, a touch of balsamic, splash of good olive oil (the bright peppery green oil, not the more buttery and smooth yellow oil), salt, pepper, basil, and thyme.

For fancy add in cucumber, red onion, feta, and kalamata olives.

Save the juice from the bottom of the bowl if you make a lot.  Chill it and it is a fantastic and refreshing drink.
