Wow August 11 already and hunting seasons are coming soon!
« on: August 10, 2011, 11:45:29 PM »
Whew! what was supposed to be summer has passed by quickly and its Aug 11!  I've got my moose registration hunt card and caribou harvest card already. Don't need to get a brown bear tag or pay $25 this season.  Great.  Need to save $$ and gas just went up to $6.24 or something last week.  I sure hope to find a moose.  But might have to buy another freezer - mine are nearly full of salmon. With this crazy economy stuff I'm thinking it would be nice to be really loaded up with all I can catch, pick or find.  Good luck and check the reg book carefully for any changes - gotta follow my own advice on this.

I've had a fire going all week, just too cold to be comfortable in the mornings.

Dand,

Instead of another freezer, try canning!  I know several folks who can all of their deer and fish, both in SE and the interior.  It's more work, but you won't lose everything when the power goes out.  If you have a root cellar the canned goods won't freeze either.

One nice thing about canning meat.  It's fully cooked, and can be eaten right from the can/jar.  I have done that and put it in jars.  Wife says it looks gross, she can see it through the glass, but it's still good.

Good point on the canning.  We plan to do that too for the first time.  But we don't have a lot of jars. All of them are full of salmon.  Friends gave us some canned moose and yes it is VERY handy to shake out of the jar, warm in the microwave and chow down. And that canned meat is always tender. We finally tried quarts for salmon this year but can only get 8 jars in the cooker vs 16 pints, and it takes a long time cooking.  Our friends have a canner that takes 36 pints - maybe I can borrow that one.

Well 3 mornings to the opener , I woke up with a cold this morning, and my boat's gas tank showed a leak when I started to fill it the other night. I'll just take things one at a time and see how it works out.

thanks for ideas.  Several cases of quart jars is cheaper than a freezer and keeping it running.  And I have no space for a 3rd freezer.

Good luck to all and for Pete's sake think safety. Seems like Alaskans are dying left and right the last 2 weeks. Pilots keep up your air speed and don't push the weather.
