RECALLED 586--PICS
« on: August 11, 2011, 04:14:09 AM »
Here are Pics of the recalled 586 that Smit corrected.
Replace hammer nose. This is a very noticable change from the old original. Less hook and shorter FP.
Replaced bushing.
I am pleased with the work and Smiths turnaround.

Glad they gave you good service, Will. What was the problem, soft strikes? You may have already mentioned it but I been busy with baby and momma.  :D

I bought the gun off a feller on the S&W forums and someone mentioned that it had a recall back in 1981.
I didn't want to put Murphy to the test--the gun has not actually been fired.
The recall was because SOME 586's punctured the primer and/or showed signs of flowing + locked up the gun.
They shortened the FP and replaced the bushing with one that has a smaller hole--to prevent the flowing.

Bill, was this all 586's or certain serial numbers?  I have a 586, but haven't had any punctured primers with about 400 rounds of .38 Special +P or about 230 rounds of .357. In fact I haven't experienced any problems at all with it.

If it has an 'M' stamped above the model number in the crane, 'or' a 2 or higher suffix after the model no(586) you are already modified(with M) or a later number that's past the recall period. I may be looking at a 586 this weekend & have been doing some research.

Only the early manufactured 586's had a hammer mounted firing pin, mine was manufactured late 83 or early 84 and it had a frame mounted fp. This is about the only gun I sold and wish I still owned.

I just bought a 586 this weekend. I called S&W & they are sending the shipping label. I don't like sending guns off, hopefully it gets back O.K.. I don't want a shipping employee with sticky fingers lifting it.

I shot mine for almost 30 yrs with no issues. Several thousand 148gr wadcutters and 158gr SWCs through it. Kept thinking about sending it back but never did. It shot too well and had too good of a trigger to chance it. Not a CCW weapon so I figured if the bushing ever slid, then I would send it in.

That's my situation.  I bought mine used.  I did call SW and talked to Joe in customer service. He looked up my 586 and said it was in an old recall the best he remember.  He also said that as old as it is (1981) and as much as it had been shot (how does he know?) that if anything was going to happen, it already would. The gun is about 95%.

I ask him to send me a written guarantee that the gun was fine and not subject to recall.  He then started asking me for my name, address, etc. and said he would send me a mailing label and instructions that day.  I got the papers to send it back, but it does have a sweet trigger pull.  Decisions, decisions.

For what its worth , I purchased a Lew Horton 686 in the late seventies , had a 2" barrel along with some other special attractions.  Shortly after I bought it , I got a card in the mail telling me about a recall...I did send it in , and modifications were made , along with the " M " stamped on the crane. Can't remember what that recall was for... Perhaps this was the same recall...point is , this was the stainless 686 version.

regards , irold

Bill,
What work is involved in converting your Model 586 to 9x23 and .38 Super?

I know why we do it.  I would like to have a K  or L model converted to .22 K Hornet. I think it's the K model.  Us boys and our toys.  lol

Hope you get yours back soon, so we can get a report.

Dixiejack, I did a K frame to .224 Kaychuck(original(original Harvey cartridge thet S&W modified to their Jet, some years back, still have it but, don't shoot it much anymore. Smiths had a tapered body and failed because of various reasons (OK you experts tell the real story?).
