Now I got two - 280 barrels...
« on: August 11, 2011, 06:20:32 AM »
Okay, I couldn't resist... I got another 280 barrel from a good friend here on GBO, Cougar.  Maybe it was because I have extra receivers laying around... Maybe it was because I now have a nice 26" barrel that would be perfect for something like, say, a 9.3x74R!   :P  Only time will tell...  ;D

The the meantime, since the new 280 is already receivered and stocked up, I might just as well see which of the two shoots the best so I know which one is truly the spare!   ;)  I love having options!   :D

Now, if I just had the time to work on all these projects...  :-\

If things go well tomorrow, I'll be in the same boat with two 7mm-08s.  It's not really a boat.  It feels more like a yacht.  ;D   It's always is Handi to have extras.  Of course, the extra would be a nice addition to Patty's Handi collection.  I think she'd be happier with moderate loads in the 7mm rather than light loads in her .270. Yeah, she shot my pants off again this past weekend.  I like to blame it on my eyes.

I have a weird feeling that the 9.3x74R wont clean up the chamber of a 280Rem.   I think the area of concern may be the 280's shoulder.

At the shoulder of the 280 it is about .441".  You might want to measure the diameter of the 9.3x74R 1.948" +/- up from the base to see if it is larger than the .441" of the 280.

Also, right above the rim of the 9.3x74R it is only .469".  Where as the 280 is .470" right about there.

Congrats Richard, what a predicamint!!  ;D Knight is right on, the 9.3x74R isn't big enough to clean up the shoulder of the 280 chamber unless you could set the barrel back and refit it to the frame, Ammoguide confirms this, but the 9.3x62 would work as would the .375 H&H flanged. So would a 9.3x74R Improved if there is such a critter.  ;)

The 280 has tempted me for a while. What are the merits of it versus a 270 or 30-06?

Richard,

With a little silver solder and a couple of barrel bands you could have a 280 Rem double barrel. ;D

Spanky,

280 Rem has a 4" longer barrel than the other two you mentioned.  So more velocity and/or more barrel whip.

My buddy Jeremy has a Ruger in 280. He shoots 140gr. Noslers and it hammers whitetails.

I bought a 280 just to get the receiver and stock.  I still need a receiver..............I messed up and shot it.  Somehow I always need either a receiver for a barrel, or a barrel for a receiver....

Richard, I'm a likin' that 375 thang.  Sounds VERY impressive.

I love your analogies, it really cuts to the core of things, and makes it easy to understand! ;)

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

you just gotta go with the Hollands!

I got to admit, I went through every possible cartridge and that's the only one that is halfway interesting.  Trouble is I can't find the 375 Flanged or 375 Nitro Express listed anywhere!  Timmy?   :-\

Really!   :o   Can you do that!?   ???  ...  ::)

Well, the wind is kinda out of my sails... I really wanted a 9.3x74R in a 26 inch barrel.   :(   Oh well, I'll see which 280 barrel I want to keep and figure out something to do with the other...  :'(

Richard,

Don't give up yet, do a chamber cast on the 280 and see how much the barrel would need to be set back(how big a shim) for the 9.3x74R to clean the chamber up, I've done exactly that when I made my 270 Win Ackley H&R.

If you want to go with the 375H&H flanged, maybe Jason will loan you the reamer?
