Shotgun, as your only hunting gun?
« on: August 11, 2011, 06:27:42 AM »
Morning all,

Anyone use a shotgun as your only hunting gun? Many years ago growing up in the deep south, it was not uncommon for a guy to only own one gun for all his hunting.. Most times it was a shotgun, just buy different shells for different game.  :o  I grew up hunting that way. I owned a 22 rifle but then I bought a Winchester model 12 in 16ga. Used it for everything for a few years. Slugs & buckshot for deer & hogs and shot for everything else. Worked great. But those were simpiler times.. :o  And nobody had as much as they do now days..

Growing up in NJ, a shotgun state I often thought of a single shot gun.
I think a pump or semi auto gun with a 28 to 30" barrel for all wing shooting and a 20" smooth bore with rifle sights for big game.

Until I was 20, all I had was a shotgun. My first was a 20 ga single barrel Ithaca 66. When i turned sixteen my dad told me if wanted a 12ga, he'd buy it but I had to pay for it. I traded my 20 in for an Ithaca Model 37 Deerslayer. I still have the Deerslayer and hunt with it occassionally. It's a real hoot to take to the skeet field. Last time I had it there, I shot a 25, a 24 and another 25. Sure is loud with that 20'' barrel!

I don't but realistically, I could.  A good 12 ga., especially if one had two or three barrels for it would suffice for most everything.  My 11-87 has a 28" barrel with interchangeable chokes.  That will take care of any wing shooting or small game.  I have a 21" rifled slug barrel with a cantilever scope mount.  That takes care of any big game on in NA.  I also have the 21" smoothbore slug barrel with iron sights.  I leave that mounted on it for the house and anything I need to do around there.  I guess if a guy had that and a .30-'06, a .22 rifle and a .357 revolver, pretty much anything and everything would be covered.  But about 99% of hunting can be covered with a 12 ga.

Many don't realize the capablity of a shotgun . Most any critter can be killed with one and most if not all can be stopped with one.

Grew up in Alabama. Not only did shotguns do it all, we didn't think we needed anything other than modified choke.
Never even thought about needing a rifle until I went deer hunting in Wisconsin.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

With the new sabot slugs the shotgun can give some rifles a run for the money  ;)
