The bad or maybe good news (depending on how you look at it) is you may have to date... I mean buy several .22s before you find the 'perfect' one you want to hold on to forever.   ;)

The new High Standard company is trying, and the later pistols are reportedly much better than their first ones. They've retained Bob Shea (who built the Connecticut 10X guns) to train the new crop of gunsmiths.
Original Hi Standard guns are like thoroughbreds: somewhat temperamental, but they will shoot. I use my 1975 Victor for steel plate matches.
But for a beater gun, it's hard to beat a Ruger, I prefer the MKII variant. It has a few improvements over the MKI without the lawyerized stuff on the MKIII.

I don't believe anyone mentioned my old favorites.  The Colt Woodsman series (Woodman, Challenger, Huntsman, etc.).  For years my very best woods walking pistol was a second series Woodsman Sport.  Today I used a Colt Challenger 6 inch bbl. for the same purpose.. ALWAYS very reliable.  Shoots all types .22LR (even long CBcaps as a repeater).  My very favorite, and I've owned most all of them over the years.

My vote goes to the Browning Buckmark.  High Standards are great if you can find a good used one.

I dont know, I've seen some pretty inpressive accuracy out of the p22's that I have shot. They look good, handle well, and shoot great.

+1 for the Browning Buckmark.  Just bought a 'Camper' a couple months ago with the fiber optic sight and UMX grips like Greybeards.  Those grips are a very comfy rubber that seem molded for my hand they fit so well.  The green fiber optic sight really 'pops' and is great for target and wood use.  I do wish I had some sort of tru-glo rear sight as mine came with a black adjustable rear sight.  So I bought some glow in the dark sight paint off of Gunbroker and plan on outlining the rear sight with it.

The gun is accurate and reliable so far, and I got the Camper because it came with 3 mags.  The same gun in a hard shell case only has 2 mags.  Mine has the soft shell case.

Now my ruger MkI & ruger MkII have been awesome.  But i been eyeing the 1911's in 22lr but everyone had had problems so far there seems to be no top of the line so for me the 1911 style pistols in 22lr are kind of dead for me right now.  But if money is no problem plus my luck with the CZ line of pistols being so awesome i been looking at the CZ Kadet 22lr.   Its not cheap but if its like my CZ82 & CZ83's it has to be an awesome pistol in 22lr too.

BTW;  I just started collecting the turn of the century rifles in 22's, 22L's and 22 long rifle in rollin block, falling block, single shot, pumps and bolt action clip fed too.  I been leaning more towards collecting the 22cal handguns too.  I picked up a S&W masterpiece revolver in 22lr and what a revolver it is, its awesome.  Then i started seeing all the older 22 pistols made by colt & HS ect. my list of wants just grew again. I never thought i'd be collecting the 22cal guns.  With the new grandson this one is for him now.

I have a Colt .22 RF slide/barrel kit and I have been trying to find a Colt 1911 frame to build a 1911 .22.  Then I think about one of those Kimber RF pistols.  Probably be cheaper to sell my slide kit and buy a Kimber.  I haven't found any reports on the Kimber as to whether they a worth the money or not.  My other option is to keep looking for a S-W Model 48 (now I'm getting off topic).

Go with the Buckmark.  I have two BM Micro's.  One is stock and one has a varmint barrel and target stocks and fore arm.  It also has a halo sight.

I'm a revolver guy, mostly since i'm a lefty, but my wife has a Beretta Neos. Its been very accurate plus they come with a rail already for optics.
It also eats plain jane Federal bulk without any hiccups. Its been a great all round gun.

I have a Ruger MkII w/ 6" HB that is scary accurate with small Red-Dot 2MOA optic @ 75 yds from a rest-head shots on squirrel/crow targets rom a good rest. My "what the hell is in the chicken coop" 22 auto is a Walther P22 5" barrel-which can mount a tactical light/laser. It has killed a wheelbarrow full of varmints. On target shoting- I find the rear sight a bit wide for best accuracy-my trials bear this out. My most accurate 22 is a 6" S&W M17 revolver that will shoot +/- 1" groups @ 25+ yds.

I love my 4" Colt Woodsman. It was made in the 1950's and always feed reliably and is extremely accurate, too. Nothing wrong with the Hi-Standard Model B's either. Just my 2 cents.

I prefer the Ruger Mk. II's above all others. I have found them to be as accurate as anything made. My 10" has fired several 40 x 40's and 60 x 60's in IHMSA competition. When I was a Bullseye shooter, and there was an "alibi" shoot, it was almost always because of a High Standard malfunction, and on rare occasions, a S&W 41. I only ever saw ONE with a Ruger. The Rugers I used in Bullseye were good enough for me to be competetive with Master class scores.
It's true they don't make the Mk. II anymore. Luckily, I have enough to last longer than the rest of my life.

Recently I bought a Kadet conversion for my CZ75 and it's an amazing pistol. I'm sure it's not in the same league as a S&W 41, but it's one heck of of a pistol.

I'll vote for the High Standard HD series. I've owned a Supermatic military Trophy with a 7 1/4" barrel and it shot great. I purchased a High standard Victor back in 1978 I believe. It is the most accurate pistol in 22 rimfire I have ever owned. With a scope mounted, it will put them all in the same hole at 50 yards with the right ammo. I have owned Rugers and Brownings but I still have the Victor.  If you can find one of the Stoeger Arms Pro series (Victor clone) they are also top notch. I currently own one of the Pro series and while not quite as accurate as the High Standard Victor, they are a great value. I also have an old Ruger standard model that I put a custom Bull barrel on that is a real shooter but cost a bit more than the $400 that you can get a new Target model Ruger. At any rate, the 22lr handgun is my most fired handgun. It is a great gun to get kids started in the shooting sport. My grandkids love the 22 pistols. Good shooting and Merry Christmas all.

I've had a bunch of them over the years...  Best by far is the old High Standard Victor.  I'm told the ones comeing out of Texas NOW are good accurate reliable guns.  I think they are worth takeing a look at.

I've owned S&W 41's, and the ones i've owned weren't as accurate as my Victor is, and not as reliable.

Another 22 auto that isn't as accurate as my Victor but has been very good to me and is reliable, is the OLD Colt Woodsman.  Nice 22 handguns!

My brother, along with a LOT of other folks own Browning Buckmarks, and all i hear are good things about them.  That would be one i would choose for a cheaper alternative.

The WORST 22 semi auto handguns i've ever owned has been the Ruger jamomatics.  I've yet found one even as accurate as my Woodsman, and none have been reliable.  I'm thinking they are like 10/22's, you buy them, and then start spending money on them to get them where they SHOULD have been when you bought them!

I love reading this post

I have quite a few of the pistols mentioned but I thought the only answer would be the Ruger Mark IIs
I have two identical ones with Bull barrels SS one with a 2x Leupold and one with iron sights
They are fantastic IMHO the standard that all are judged by

I will say the Neos is pretty darn good

Really?!!   Your experience sure has differed from mine regarding both.  I've found both my MKII pistol and 10/22 rifle to be extremely accurate and reliable.  Guess one of us is lucky, or maybe one of us is unlucky, when it comes to Ruger .22s.

Brett, your not alone. Between my 2 sons and I we have about 2 Ruger MKll's, 6 MKlll's and 5 10-22's. Every one one them are shooters, and are extremely accurate. The only jams I have EVER had out of any of them is with the wax coated bullets. Stick to any brand non waxed and they will shoot hunderds and hundreds of rounds between cleaning without a jam.

We are all hunters, and thos guns account for truck loads of squirrles and coons.

Rugers may not be the best, but they are at the top of the list.

The 10/22's i've owned were not jamomatics, but the semi auto handguns certainly were.

I wouldn't call the 10/22's "extremely" accurate, but they did work well.  Not one of them have been as accurate as the Marlin 60 that i have, and forget about them being as accurate as my bolt action 22's.  Yes i know, i can throw money at it (i still have one old one) and make it accurate.

Worst thing by far about 10/22's is, they sit in your hand like a beached whale!  The magazine is just plain fat, and it makes the guns handle like a 2x4...  Even changeing the stock can't fix that.

My most accurate 22 auto was a 512T ruger, about 1975 or so, cost 56.00 new, very accurate and dependable. My worse 22auto is a 200 year anniversery mod. ruger, I think it is a mk1, jamomatic, very accurate but a  agravating, still have it, tried new mags and it  still jams.
My favorite is the colt match woodsman, never owned one  but shot them a lot as well as the huntsman.
  I would like to own a mod41 S&W.
I do like the 22 revolvers by ruger.

As for the 22 rifles, 10-22's are ok in stock condition, spend about 600.00 on them and they are good, new bbl, new trigger group, new stock ect.  Just my opinion. I only own 1.  I like my marlin mod 25 for accuracy, not target shooting just hunting or random shooting. I also like my old rems, mod 550's, still have 3 of  them. The win. auto's are not my favorite either.     Not intended to offend anyone,  just my opinion.

Concho, I am a lefty, also.  I shoot revolvers and semi-autos.  Just bought a Model 41-A series. With all the .22's I have, if I had to choose just one, it would be my Model 17-6 with a 6" barrel.

+1 on the HS!  I have a Victor that I bought new in 1982 or 83.  Never owned a Mk I, II, or III...  Drilling Man is right about the 10/22s and then spending to get them right, I also think they need work.  I bought an Altemont model with a slimmed stock and a 20" barrel.  Had Randy at Ct Precision Chambering accurize and work the trigger.....cost almost as much as new one, but now it's right.
