Moth balls or dryer sheets seem to work in my boat over the winter.

I here bounce fabric material works along with hagging a air fresher (Pine Smell) for the interior and Peppermint Oil on cotton balls inside the engine area.

Had the same problem with a camper. Moth balls cured the problem.

Never had that problem with mice, at least never noticed it.  Have had that problem with cats, and squirrels.  Guess they crawled in there to be next to the warm engine.  Start engine to drive away, problem solved.

Unless of course their next to the belts, and then it's "problem doubled down" besides the mess.

My wife’s new Lexus only had 2-3K on it, she went out one morning to go to work and it wouldn’t start, I tried jumping it, still no luck.  Since there is no local Lexus dealer I called Toyota, they sent a wrecker out and hauled it to their shop. I followed them and was there when the mechanic started his check.  He found the wire harness at the point it entered the firewall completely eaten through by rats, everything was shorted out.  I called my insurance company and they told them to “fix it,’ $2,200.00 later we drove it home.

I was advised to use a type of rat and mouse bait that has a hole in the center, I took a wire-tie and put several pieces in the engine compartment, haven’t had anymore problems with rats.  I live in the city, it’s a remote area on the edge of town by a lake which attracts a lot of wildlife so we also adopted a big black tom cat, he is a holy terror on rats and mice haven’t seen any evidence of them since he moved in.

mothballs work for lot's of things. We had yellowjackets build nest up under the support caps of our pool and just for the heck of it I put a couple balls in each cap, haven't had bee's of any kind in 3 years. I have a small cupboard on the porch where every winter mice could be found so I just stored the box in it and no mice since.

+1 on the mothballs, they seem to work.

I was going to add this earlier........

I place a half a dozen moth balls in old socks. Tie a knot in the top of each one, and come spring, I place them in an old coffee can or other sealable container and they're ready for use the next time I need them.

Had problems with mice under the "hood" of my outboard one winter. Placed sock with mothballs inside and voila...... no more vermin.
