SB1 or SB2
« on: August 12, 2011, 05:38:07 PM »
Can you tell by the serial number on the frame  if it is a SB1 or SB2? I looked at a Handi at Academy  Sports today  in .243 Win.  with a BSA 3x9 40mm scope for $289. Serial nunber  CBA 1124XX  If it is a 2 I will brobably go back and get it. Also had a 7mm-08  with same scope for $279.  Both sound like a good deal to me. Either one would be my first Handi .

The factory would not have used a SB1 for a 243 or any high pressure round.  It is an SB2.

To determine which is which on used guns, check the FAQ's.

Wow that was quick!! Thanks !    A friend  of my oldest son has a  .243  with a synthetic stock and is going to loan it to us for the week end so  my 11 yr old  can shoot . If all goes well we will probably go back Sat. afternoon and make a purchase.

You can't go wrong with the .243, that said, I would recommend the 7mm-08 instead.  The 7mm-08 kicks just a little more than the .243, but you will have a larger selection of bullets, if you reload.  Also, the .7mm (.28cal), is a larger and heavier bullet, than the .243, which can help if the shot on the deer is not perfect or marginal.  The larger bullet would cause a lot more damage to the animal than the .243.  thus helping in harvesting the deer, or causing a larger wound channel for any follow up tracking.  An example of this; on .243Win. the usual factory hunting load would use a 100grain bullet, on the 7mm-08, a usual factory hunting load would use a 140grain bullet.
Again both calibers are great, but if your son can handle the 7mm, that's what I would recommend.
Best of luck on whatever caliber you choose, and welcome to Handi's.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.
