44 mag power
« on: August 13, 2011, 10:10:31 AM »
Watched a hunting show the other night with a guy taking an elk with a 44 mag hand gun. The shot dropped the big elk in his tracks at 75 yards... they didn't say what bullet was used but the show is sponsored by Hornady. Thought it was pretty cool,,, I think it goes to show the old 44 mag Handi will kill just about any critter on this side of the pond. :)

I shot my buck last year with my 44 mag rifle. It'll put 'em down every time. ;)

I like my 44 mag handi, have not killed anything with it yet, but as long as you get to know your trajectory and know your guns limits, you can amaze a lot of people. I hope to take a deer and a hog with mine here in the next couple years. thejanitor

What are you using for ammo in your 44? If I'm shooting factory ammo I go with Winchester 240gr. softpoints and for handloads I use Hornady XTP 240gr. ammo over H110.

I have only shot magtech 240 jsp in it over a 23.5 gr charge of W296.  It is exactly middle book load in my 25th edition Hodgdon manual. Not a lot of room to work up a load, but it shoots well and recoil is moderate. Have not chronied them but according to the book it should be around 1850ish fps.

Back  during the 2008 deer season I took 5 deer with my .44 mag handi rifle. I reload for this caliber and I have had real good accuracy with the 240gr hornady XTP and a charge of 24.0gr of W296... My son hunts with the rifle now and has taken several deer with it the last couple of years. The 44 mag is a great round for deer... ;)

Sure is. I think it's a little bit overlooked nowadays when compared to some of the more potent pistol cartridges but it's still filling freezers every year. ;)

somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, wouldn't be the first time. BUT... hasn't the 44mag in a handgun taken the big 5?

If a well placed 44 won't stop it then you had better call Skully and Mulder or the Ghostbusters.
Who you gonna call?
