Just ordered a 45-70 --- Its here, and now with pics
« on: August 13, 2011, 10:19:31 AM »
I have been reading this forum for quite some time now, I finally registered today.
Earlier today I placed an order for a SB2-457.

It will be used primarily for target shooting, maybe later for hunting.  I'm sure I want something better than the stock sights on the rifle, but I have not made up my mind yet.  A low powered scope, red dot sight, or quality peep aperture sights are all a possibility,  I will wait until I have the rifle in hand and play with it a little.

Depending on age and how good your vision is, a peep-sight is hard to beat.  I'm at the age where I'm beginning to have trouble seeing iron sights.  I scored a deal on a used Redfield peep for my .30-30 and but when it came to my .44 mag, the scope and peep were pretty close to the same price.  For even money, I'll take the scope every time.  I'm also talking about a dial adjust Williams peep, I didn't like the cheaper ones.

Welcome and congrats! See Peep and Firesights as well as Long Range Sights in the FAQs, pretty hard to beat the Williams FP-TK with a gib lock knob instead of the slotted screw for tooless elevation adjustments for target shooting.  ;) A better hunting sight is either a Skinner or Nodak Spud.

Things to check in the presence of your FLL and before you take it home:

1) Check visually the inside of the barrel from both ends and make sure the rifling is spiral all the way.

2) Is it complete?  Look for the presence of attachments for the swivels and swivels), front and rear sights.

If anything is missing or not right, tell the FLL to ship it back.

Lately the QC of H&R has been horrendous.

Well you picked a good one for sure! :D  The 45-70 is one of the must have Handi's and they tend to shoot great with little or no tinkering. If you handload for it you can shoot everything from 150gr. collar buttons to big 500gr+ bullets. It'll take any game animal in the world and it's fun to shoot. Keep in mind when loading for it that heavy loads can beat the hell out of you at the bench so alot of guys stick to trapdoor or lever gun loads. ;)
Good luck with it and welcome to the site. ;D

Thanks for the tips, Ill be sure to check it over very well before I take it home.

I plan on reloading for it.  I all ready have a bag of new brass and a few hundred 405g cast lead bullets.

Picked it up this afternoon, 5 business days since it was ordered.  I'll clean it up later tonight, but I wont have time this weekend to try it out.

So here it is, I decided to go with a low power scope,  Its a bushnell 1.5-4x 32.  Its mounted in leopold rings and an EGW base.  With the scope removed, I can still see the sights over the base.

Tell us more about that scope mount.  Is it a Picatinny mount?  What is the model number.  I looked at the site, but the mount they show for the Handi/NEF looks a little shorter than yours.

The EGW base is 6" long, same as the Weaver 82 and the discontinued H&R Ultra base.

I did some looking in the FAQ and found the link to their website.  Turns out I was at a distributor site, the picture was of a shorter base, maybe an inch.  But their right site looks like the pics here.

So I could use this sight to forward mount (semi-scout?) a long eye relief scope?

Oh, I agree about the QC of the newer rifles.  I have not bought a new one, but have looked at several lately.  Several have had badly aligned sights and some of the synthetic forends have been badly aligned as well.

I had thought about doing this but didn't find a scope with the proper eye relief and magnification in my price range.

Yes, it can as can the Weaver and Ultra rails, the Weaver actually works best for this due to the flat spot at the rear which makes clearance for the ocular bell of a short scope mounted low ahead of the hammer, see the scout mount pics in the FAQs, low, fixed power shotgun scopes work excellent for this.

I made my way to the range this morning to try her out.  I fired 25 rounds total of 405g lead pushed by reloader 7.  With 36 grains velocity averaged 1522 fps, and 40g averaged 1605 fps.

I started at about 30 yards to get on paper, then moved to 100 yards.  With my 4x scope shots were in about a 6-8" group.

I wasn't overly concerned with accuracy today, just wanted to get some lead down range, chronograph my loads, and dial in the scope.

Next time I will take my time and see how well I can group.
