Remington 722
« on: August 14, 2011, 03:09:56 AM »
I have spent the last decade or so looking for a new bolt for a Remington 722 cut for the 222 Remington Magnum cartridge.  I have almost given up trying to find one.  Does anyone know of a gunsmith/machinist that makes them?  Or a 722 bolt for any cartridge, as at this point, I could rebarrel it jsut to get it firing again?

i think that the bolt by itself only cares about the diameter of the case head and not specifically the cartridge so you can also use a bolt from a regular 222 Rem gun and since you need a gunsmith to check and adjust for proper headspace I believe that bolts from the newer model 700's could also be sent to your smith with your rifle and made to work.  So with the 700 bolts as usable options you are no longer at a loss to find one.  There are literally thousands out there.  If you still can't get just the bolt with the correct diameter face, you could get literally ANY bolt and have the gun rebarreled to an appropriate calliber to get you a usable gun again; a good excuse to try a new calliber.

I have a 722 in .244 Rem, and a 700 in 6MM Rem. I can tell you that the bolts will interchange. I have never fired either firearm with the wrong bolt because of headspace issues.  So it would seem to me that you should be able to find a bolt.

Ok,
A short action 700 bolt will work just fine in a 722 action.    The reverse is not true due to the guide rib added to the later model 700 actions.  The difference in the 722 and 700 bolts is the slot for the guide rib on the right hand lug at the ejection port.    I believe that a Model 600 or 660 bolt will also work.

Thank you for the suggestions, I had considered the 700 bolt but was able to test one.  I will pursue that angle and let you know how it works out.  I may end up with another 458x2" American!
