150grn"s of powder?????
« on: January 04, 2004, 03:48:55 PM »
What is the benefit or reason behind shooting so much powder?
Isn"t 90 to 110 grn"s plenty of powder to hunt anything you want?
Just asking, thank"s for any replies. :o

Grouse, for me it's a flatter trajectory and the added range it provides me with. I never want to have to guess hold over on an animal and the heavier load helps flatten out my trajectory, giving me some extra range.

Grouse, I think you already knew the answer to the question before you asked it! It is not "powder" itself, it is gas produced. Just throw a bullet through your chrono with 110 grains T 7 FFFg, then tell me how much Goex you have to burn to get there. :?

Randy, I gotta get a chrono first. I want to see if ML shooters
are giving up accuracy for speed?

Sheephunter, is that your most accurate load?

Some are, some are not. Actually, some bullets won't lock up properly until you do push them extremely hard.

Using "so much" powder is deceptive-- 150 grains T 7 pellets is 93 gr. approx. by weight, your Goex is closer to 1:1.

I can shoot sub 1" groups with it so it is more than accurate enough for hunting. Could I shoot .70 groups with 100 grains versus .80 groups with 150 grains? Possibly but the gun shoots so well with 150 grain loads and I get the range and energy that I want that I really haven't messed with any other loads. I don't see a point to loading down to 100 grains when I'm getting this type of accuracy and downrange performance.

Thank"s sheephunter, This spring i want to start testing some hotter
loads. I shoot two 777 pellets now. I would like to push it to, 105 to
110grn"s of loose 777 powder. Like Randy said, need a chrono also.

personnally I think shooting 150grs of powder is stupid. I have always shot 90grs. and it has always got the job done with no problems. I have tried 150 on the range and all it did was blow the ramrod half way out of its holder, and I surely wasn't inpressed with the accruacy at all after trying it. So whats the point. I will just use what works the best.

no reason for me either. Two 777 pellets and 220grn or 300grn
DeadCenter, it"s all over for that deer.

The point is that if you have not tried 100, 110, 120, 130, 140 grains of powder-- you don't know what "works the best." There is a lot of room between 90 and 150.

Certainly, especially with Triple 7 loose powder. Low yield BP, such as Goex FFg, never has exhibited a huge change in 5 gr. volumetric increments-- to the point where many volumetric powder measures do not even have 5 grain index marks.

I shoot a T/C Black diamond in 50 cal. I have been using 100 grn Clean Shot pellets. Now I have heard of some awseome shots on the bench from this board. For me its a 4" at a 100 and I am happy. Now Clean Shot leaves a residue like old soap in your dishwasher. After a year in the closet. My question is I see alot of posts on Triple seven. Has anyone have some comparison in there experience from bp to 3x7?

Chuck Hill has a Black Diamond that has done well for him, perhaps he can report on your specific gun.

Triple 7 loose powder is the hottest BP sub, and gives the highest velocities.

My Black Diamond is a particularly accurate rifle.  90gr 777 ffg 348gr Power Belt, 100gr 777 ffg 250gr PTX AND Shockwave, 300gr SST two 777 pellets, 100gr Pyrodex Select 240gr XTP, and 110gr Pyrodex Select 250gr PTX ALL shot fine out of my rifle.  Really an easy rifle to load for.
