Did some more cannon hunting!!
« on: August 14, 2011, 04:53:00 PM »
I went to a place north of Indianapolis called Conner Prairie. They do a little reenactment and have a few nice cannons, one on dispay and one they shoot.

Since I was down near Indy, I stopped in Kokomo and saw their's as well. Unfortunately it's in a glass building and it was very difficult to get good pics. ENJOY!!

Thanks for the pics, Dave. That's a fine example of a CSA 12-pdr Howitzer; I think it's one of only two that still exist that were made by Leeds. I don't remember ever seeing another single cannon displayed in its own buiding like this one is.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

What a nice display!  Obviously done by someone who appreciates what they have and want to keep it nice.

Any idea what the deal is with the strange looking finish on the bronze barrel? Kinda looks sandblasted.

Video from Conner Prairie. The said they were using 8 ounces of black powder (pre molded in aluminum foil, blank charges). The friction primer 'roman candled' on them and caught everyone by surprise.

I should also add that it was their second friction primer on that load. First one just popped, everyone was on edge. They waited 3 minutes, re pricked the bag, new primer.
