458 at auction arms
« on: August 16, 2011, 03:26:44 PM »
I found this at auction arms, its a 458. what perked my interest and made me contact the seller is the case hardened bracket screwed to the left side of the receiver. i asked him what the purpose is and he replied, 'its to strengthen the receiver'. omg.

I saw one like this at a gunshow in Hickory NC.  It was a 10 ga shotgun with a liner sweated in.  It too had the nice case hardened strengthening block on the side of the frame.  Asking price was a mere $450.  I told the guy I would rather shoot a hand grenade, he took grave exception to my comment.  He told me that people who didn't know what they were doing should stay shut up.  Hey, I'm just a lowly engineer, with a lot of experience in a metal failure analysis lab.  So I just shut up and kept walking.  And here is your Darwin Award, sir, if you ever try to shoot that thing.

If only H&R had known that a little plate and a couple of screws could have solved the problem of the Handi Magnums. And what a nice touch to case harden it.

Pete, I think it would look nice if you took out one of those strengthening screws and put in a nice saddle ring instead, cut the barrel to 15 inches and rechamber it to 50BMG.  It'd be a great one shot saddle gun.  If you decided to sell it, a nice touch would be to include preplanned funeral arrangements.

I see no reason to be afraid. As a reloader you could easily start with something very mild and work your way up if you wanted. The 458 2" or 458 American is the belted equivelant of the 45 70.  No I don't think I would try 458 magnum factory loads.
I  question the "gun smithing" but I am not going to run any calculations on the actions strength. The standard SB2 frame can take a whole lot. Unfortunately this isn't standard anymore.

458 has considerably less back thrust than 500 s&w when loaded to full specs. My 500 works great of course I down load it.

Are you trying to say you think it would be alright to have a Handi in 458? ???

They list the rifle as a Topper which appears to be a Model 158 or could be an SB1 which have a cast iron frame, certainly not made for any high pressure standard round, let alone a high pressure magnum round, that smith is a fool as is anyone that shoots a full pressure round in it!  ::)

It's also built on a Topper frame.  It's that about the same strength as a SB1?  I'd ask the guy to test fire it with full power loads and provide 3 empty cases and a target with it.  :D
