I wonder why the brace bar is only on one side of the receiver and not both. That has to be one of the most interesting brakes I have ever seen too. Anyone know how to contact Bob Phillips? I have a few questions for him. ::)

I saw one like this at a gunshow in Hickory NC.  It was a 10 ga shotgun with a liner sweated in.  It too had the nice case hardened strengthening block on the side of the frame.  Asking price was a mere $450.  I told the guy I would rather shoot a hand grenade, he took grave exception to my comment.  He told me that people who didn't know what they were doing should stay shut up.  Hey, I'm just a lowly engineer, with a lot of experience in a metal failure analysis lab.  So I just shut up and kept walking.  And here is your Darwin Award, sir, if you ever try to shoot that thing.

Interesting that you should mention this. I googled Bob Phillips and found one in NC. I wonder if this is coincidence...

I think I answered my own last question.

Thanks, Dinny

Now just maybe that "brace" on the left side of the receiver isn't a brace at all, but the base for a peep type sight similar to the old Redfields. :-\

That 458 is a twin to the Grenades we used to shorten the fuses on and scatter along the trails in Southeast Asia. The gooks would pick them up and throw them back at some unsuspecting GI. Only problem was when the spoon was released it went Bang in the gooks hand ;D ;D ;D . That Handi is in the same league!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm...drill a hole right at the corner where all the force is being concentrated to strengthen the action...isn't that like cutting a board twice and it still being too short?
I don't know what that guy was smoking/huffing/shooting up when he had that brain storm, but I hope it doesn't hit the streets...my job is hard enough as it is!
As I see it, you wouldn't have to worry about the barrel going through your head with the rest of the gun, that muzzle break should keep it traveling straight, like an arrow, to the target!
Without the strengthing plate, it would have just been a ticking time bomb...with it, a grenade with no spoon.

IMHO it is not what comes out of the front end that tears up a rifle but the push to the sides and back. I rechecked the Speer hand book and it looks like the 500 s&w EXCEEDS the 458 win in both departments. Therefore the handi should be thoroughly adequate for  rechambering to 458. I  have seen on several forums some guy talking about the " 12gauge from hell". They make the brass by cutting down 50BMG shells.

The problem is that the thing was made on an SB-1 frame, which is cast iron.  It will never take the pressure.  It might hold for one shot, maybe 10, maybe 100, but it's gonna let go and I sure don't want to be holding it.   When I learned the trade I was taught to go for safety, if there is any question at all don't do it.  Goatwhiskers the Elder

I don't mean you can convert a shotgun to 458 but I think you could convert a rifle. As far as recoil goes the 458may not be any worse than a 10 ga or 3 1/2 12 ga neither of which I care to shoot.

My 'Ol' Ugly OverKill' 12ga. Buck is under 6#, and according to the online recoil chart isnt as much 'free recoil' as a 458, but I do not want it to be either! I will not try 3" slug loads in it......call me a wuss, I do not care.
Why didnt he use the right platform to exercise the work?(then he wouldnt have 'needed' the dumb 'brace') Why is he trying to dump it?. There really should be some way to help these sites 'police' these 'bombs' before somebody gets hurt.

Wouldn't it be the right to thing to do to send this seller a letter to warn him of the problem, and of course a link to this discussion?
By selling it to an unsuspecting individual he could actually be, in the worst case scenario, committing involuntary manslaughter.

I received this reply from my gunsmith today.

"Adam,

well, I finally got hold of the guy who made that stupid H&R in 458 Win. Mag. and I thought we were gonna have an intelligent conversation until he asked my name, and when I told him, he said I KNOW YOU and he hung up! 6 phone calls later, no answer or returned messages...

Oh well. I wouldn't touch that gun with a 10 foot pole or even set it off with a 50 foot string...."

Just goes to show that no matter how old some people are, they still act like a child. I just hope no one gets hurt shooting one of his contraptions.

This thread, and others like it, makes me wonder why someone in Mass. decided to keep the pivot pin in the same location when they started making SB2s for bottle neck & higher pressure chamberings.  They new enough to move the pin to make a Sidekick an MZ and not a firearm but didn't consider that someone would put a magnum or other higher pressure CF rifle barrel on a cast iron frame?   I just hope that the "smith" who built this fine gun also worked his magic on the latch shelf so the new owner only gets a pop open and not something a lot worse.

I asked him the queston, Was this built on a SB1 ( low pressure frame ) or sb2 frame and have you ever fired it. His reply was that it was built on a 10 ga. H&R frame and that  they have never fired it.

A new reply from my gunsmith. Looks like he's doing right and making life a little safer for everyone. :)

"Adam,I contacted our Attorneys concerning this gun and they in turn contacted ATF...

We need to get this listing taken out of the public view before someone gets hold of this gun and gets killed...

have calls in to AuctionArms and hope thay will return my calls...

Even with this gun being built off of a 10 ga. frame, it is still a shotgun frame and makes it no better than if it were built off the $99 Wally World N.E.F. shotguns!

Another problem is that the 10 ga. has a "large" firing pin - which WILL rupture rifle primers...

Sorry to get into all this but, this is just plain wrong and something that should NOT have been built - unless he filled the bore with epoxy so it could not be fired and just used as a conversation piece...."

Thanks, Dinny

The pictures of the frame on the auction site appear to show that the frame is Case Colored so I think that it would be an older 10 ga and would be cast iron and not one of the new SB2 10 ga H&R frames.  The description also refers to the guns as a Topper so I am thinking that it is an older gun.  I hope that Dinny & his gunsmith's work pays off and this gun goes away.
