In the above posts Trail boss was frowned on by a couple, but in our two 45-70 handis we really like it. As with any powder you must follow the directions. Compressing TB would change the size of the pieces/kernals and thus the burn rate would change -DANGEROUS!..... As long as you follow the directions it is very fun to shoot and we have one rifle that the holes will clover leaf at 100 yds.
For the actual hunting load we use IMR 4198 with a 405 gr Remington bullet.
I wouldn't even try a 500 gr bullet because with Petemi's huntin' load with that 405 gr it gives me all the recoil I care to tackle.
Have fun with your gun, I hope you get something for the freezer with it. thejanitor

Order up some KIK 2f from Powder Inc. in 10lb lots its 156$ delivered to your door.
You'll also need to lube your bullets with a good bp lube, good ones to use are bullshops nasa, and Sagebrush Alox. In addition you'll get better results if you put a card wad between the powder and the bullet. .030 fiber wads are a good place to start, and I use alot of .060 wads.

When you go over there to Jerry's to get the KIK powder have him sell you some good bp lube. The alox will just make a tarry goo in the barrel with bp. He's also got some good bullets already lubed, ask him about the 480 gr bullets.

just talked to him. $11/lb they don't sell lube, they're just a powder distributor.

Well buy a box or two of those ugly bullets of his when you go get the powder.

I shoot that bullet 500gr LEE all the time, had a BC but also have a M1867 Remington RB, and a Shiloh long range express so I sold the BC, not because it shot worse but because I could get my money out of it and be hard pressed to get what I think the 1874 Shiloh is worth. The 500gr bullet shot very good out of the BC not a lot of difference in POA from the Shiloh, but you can shoot the Shiloh a lot longer as it weighs around 12# and the BC 7-8# hard on old men. I will not tell you the load but I use surplus powder 50BMG pull down powder with the same results as black powder but not quite as dirty. Right at 1200fps from the BC. .

I loaded some Montana Precision Cast 500 grainers with 35.3 grains IMR 4198.  1500 fps or so.  They are accurate and, to me, brutal in a Handi-Rifle.  I wouldn't want any more, much less a .458 Win Mag like that other thread was talking about!  That's the most powerful round I shoot and the old Handi sez "Is that all ya got?"  I sez to the Handi, "What about my scope?", and Handi sez  "Crybaby."  Guilty.   ;D

I bet you're getting more than 1500 fps with that load.

The Lyman 48th indicates it's over 1500fps in a 24" or 28" barrel, they don't specifiy which of their two test guns they use in their data. They list 38gr under a 475gr(COL 2.8") cast bullet at 1570fps and the same load under a 535gr(COL 2.930") bullet at 1499fps. Shorter COLs will increase velocity.
