semi auto rifle and a handgun in same caliber
« on: August 17, 2011, 06:50:46 PM »
My boss is just starting to get into shooting for the first time. He has a cheap .22 pistol and an old .22 bolt. I've tried to get him to upgrade to a pair of quality .22's but he's firm he wants a semi auto rifle and pistol/revolver in the same caliber and more powerful than a .22. He wants them for home defence and and target shooting. This is not an area I'm familiar with, What's on the market? What would you buy?

The Hi Point 9mm, 40 and 45 carbines come to mind.  Maybe a M1 Carbine and a Ruger 30 carbine revolver, or a Ruger 44 mag carbine rifle with a matching revolver.  How about an AR-15 9mm carbine, or one of the recent Marlin Camp Rifles.....

Ruger made a PC9 and PC40 for a few years. For lack of a better discription they were 10/22's on steroids in either 9mm or 40S&W and took the same pistol mags as their P85 series hand guns.
Marlin made two different camp carbines one was a 9mm and used the S&W double stack mag and a S&W 910 would be a good companion that take the same mags.
The second Marling was a 45 ACP that eats out of the standard 1911 Mag.  So a 1911 would be a good choice to share mags.
With the above guns there is No guessing what mag goes where same mag goes in the rifle and the handgun.
If he wants to get a Pistol caliber AR then they make it in 9, 40, and 45 and any handgun in a similar caliber can be purchased.  The long strait mag is for the rifle and the short one is the handgun.

I have the Marlin 45 Camp Carbine with a Springfield 1911. Like Mcwoodduck said, same mags, very nice. The carbine is no longer in production, so and AR in 45 would be my next choice.

Kel-Tec SUB 2000, they come in different mag configurations.S&W model 59 series mags, Berreta '92, that will also  use Taurus '92 mags. Glock mags. Alos come in 9mm and 40 calibers, plus they fold in half.  HTH  Doug

I bought one of the Marlin Camp guns in 45acp. It was a dream come true, until I fired it. The bolt springs on the blow back action were way weak, and the vibration in the hardwood stock was so intense that it would actually sting my cheek. I called Marlin, and they had very little to say about the problem. I called Wolf Springs, and at the time they didn't have a fix. The concept was really appealing but, I could resolve the weak spring issue, and sold it.
I have heard that some liked them, and ignored the issue, but I suspect their short lived market availability was attributed to this. It was basically the same action as their Model 60 22 rifle. A little light in the britches for 45acp I guess.
One other issue was that the brass was flung with great speed and distance.

I would buy a semiauto pistol in the caliber I wanted and a quality semiauto shotgun & just make it work.  :o  Like Jeff Cooper used to say about the carbine & pistol sets they both have the same reach. Give me more reach or more knock-down in my long gun.  ;)

A good auto pistol, and shotgun are an excellent complement to one another. I have carried and used both for many years both professionally, and for travel and home defense. I personally prefer the gas operated shotgun, but many like the blow back action.
A Glock and a tricked out 1100 are hard to beat.

Regards,
But you now have two differnt calibers to buy and keep track of.  The idea of a simple carbine and handgun that can share ammo dates back to cowboy times and why the Colt SAA was chambered in 44-40 to pair with the Winchester 1873 rifles.  one box of ammo was able to feed the rifle/ carbine and the handgun
I agree with you that a shotgun is a gret all around firearm and gives you, with a second barrel, a wide variety of shooting options.
The Ruger PC-9 would have been a hit as LAPD wanted them but they wanted them to feed from Beretta 92 Mags, to replace the shotguns in the squad cars (this was befoere the Hollywood shoot out that casued most departments to adopt the AR-15 / M16 as a squad care rifle).  Bill Ruger said NO.  that police can buy Ruger handguns to pair with the carbines and killed the project.  I would have purchased one if it had an option to take Sig mags.
The long arm would be primary and being able to top off or reload from the pistol would make more sense as it is easier and more accurate to shoot a long gun than a handgun.
Some one could make a mint if they made an AR upper that shoots 9, 40, and 45 and mag well adapter that will accept the most popular pistol mags (Beretta 92, Glock 17 / 23, Sig 226, Ruger 85, S&W 59, and H&K USP)  I would buy one. Giving me the ability to have two guns that feed from the same mag system.

Freezer:  a nice used Smith and Wesson Model 10 in 38 spl or a nice used M65 (?) in 38/357 is a excellent choice for the handgun aspect of what your boss may be looking for and is fairly inexpensive.  The rifle part - I think he would be very well served with a Rossi M92 or Marlin M94 in 38/357.  I know he is looking for a semi-auto rifle but they are few and far between in any meaningful caliber without looking like the submachine gun next door.  Something as innocuous as a 357 lever action can be handled almost as fast as a semi but should have a lot more power to it.  jmtcw.

I agree with Mikey, a levergun in .357 has a capacity of 9+1 and the round is a proven self defense round.

I've never understood the appeal of same caliber handguns and rifles. Granted a .357 or .44 magnum carbine gets quite a bit more velocity than a same caliber revolver but the auto pistol cartridges gain very little from a longer barrel. When I actually carry both a long gun and a handgun I do so expressly because they fire very different cartridges for different purposes. This isn't 1880, you'll never be a week's pack trip from the nearest trading post, ammo supply just isn't an issue. I think it's just one of those things which at first glance seems like a great idea but in actual practice one soon gets over it. If I carry a rifle I want it to fire a rifle cartridge.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

Coyote Joe,
I agree with you for the most part.
But this is only for a self defensive situation.  having one ammo one preferably one single magizine to feed both the handgun and hte rifle makes home and ranch defense easier.  Espeacally for a Novice to firearms and some one that is not a gun guy.but wants protection.  and one ammo one load and one or two boxes of ammo needed.  With only one type of ammo hopefully the guns will be shot and malfunction drills done .  Auto guns stop running for the novice most of the time.
Other than that it is hard to beat a shotgun and a revolver for the house.

As a personal defensive set up I have the Camp Carbine and 1911. Great combo, fast accurate and relyable.

As a field match up I have a bunch!! Teaming a SA rev and a Marlin/Winchester lever is a match made in heaven!!
