Should I tear down the action of my BPS for cleaning/oiling?
« on: August 18, 2011, 01:52:42 PM »
I have been disassembling my CZ sporter rifles this week and cleaning out the buildup inside the bolt bodies, despite having done this 5 years ago.  There was some varnish buildup from time and heat internally as well as the usual soot.  These rifles are around 10 years old.

My Browning BPS is 14 years old, has seen some hunting and trap use, and while I clean and oil what I can get at inside the action after shooting it as well as the barrel, I am thinking of doing a tear down and meticulously cleaning and oiling the interior parts.  There are some You Tube videos showing the procedure, but the owner's manual says not to take this area apart.

Should I just leave it alone, or could it use some TLC?  I used to own a Remington 870 and it saw lots of use, never did take it apart either.

Thanks.

If you are concerned about fouling / gunk accumulation, but uncomfortable doing a complete disassemble, I would use one of the aerosol products designed to clean an action, without leaving any residue, then follow up with a light application of a non-gumming lube, like Break Free CLP.  I seldom detail strip my guns unless exposed to contaminants like sand, or heavy, caked on fouling.

Bigeasy...yeh, that is what I usually do with my Ruger Mk. 3 series pistols as a tear down on those is a pain in the neck, keeps em' clean and lubed though.
