Can a neck be sized up?
« on: August 19, 2011, 04:43:26 AM »
Say a 30-30 necked up to 35. I am just brainstorming and all I have seen were necked down to a smaller caliber. Would going from 30 to 35 be stretching the neck to much?
My remember'er is broke, but my forgetter is getting better.

Not if you use a step expander. Sometimes you can just fireform it; depends a lot on the brass hardness too.

When making 7 TCU out of 223 brass that is what you do . I would buy 223 rounds and fire in the 7 TCU then run thru the 7 TCU dies. Others like 357 herret just trimmed and run thru forming dies. If its a big step say 2506 to 3006 maybe a 270 die first then the 3006 die would make it easier or a step expander as mentioned . Remember to fire form with a light load .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I take 35 Whelen up to abt. 460, I expand the shoulder also. I use mica mixed with number 12 shot in an old bullet box to lube the case necks.

Are you asking HOW to expand with out having to trim or are you asking if a 35-30 is possible?  35-30 has been around for a number of years and has been a thing to do with shot out 30-30's.

I've made 358 win from 308 cases without bad things happening. Just lubed them good and pushed the die through the case. Anneal after to relieve any stress and the case will last longer.

We routinely take .223 WSSM cases, anneal necks, and then fireform to .358 caliber in one step with Unique and Cream of wheat.  We lose a few in the process but the majority come out just fine....
