I just bought a S&W .357 mag. and when I showed it to my wife, she said "Wow, that's beautiful. What are you going to do with it?' Now that is an open question if I ever heard one. Come to think about it, that is the same thing she said about the last four guns I brought home. I think, but don't say out loud "Now that's a stupid question to ask. What do I do with all my guns? I put them in the safe and take them out and look at them maybe every 6 to 12 months, clean them and put them back up or I shoot one once in a blue moon. That's justification for having them and buying more."

Is she interested in "What you are going to do with it" or is she saying "Not another freaking gun. I guess we won't get the porch steps replaced", etc., etc.

So I am asking you--does your wife, mate, etc. have a pat question to ask you when you come home with that new pride and joy your favorite gun dealer helped you decide into buying and what is she really saying about you bringing home another gun?

I think you just answered your own question, including the one about the porch steps. In my youth, I bought many a gun I did not need, when things for the family, and home would have been far more practical, and less self-centered.
Now in my 60s, I wait, and have even sold all, yes all, of my safe queens. I am more into saving, and WE, than ME. If that makes any sense.

Dixijack what are the odds you're just trying to read too much into it? Odds are she doesn't know that much about guns and therefore just doesn't know what else to say. I say this because my wife is much that way. She knows very well how to use a couple of them and can be quite good with them but she just plain doesn't care. I come out with something new and not being the type to try to hide anything, offer to show her what I have and seldom get more than a "That's nice." Wouldn't you really rather have it like that than be one of the guys who thinks he has to hide a new purchase for as long as he can because he doesn't have the stones to be honest with his wife? When asked what are you going to do with it just answer, shoot it.

My wife just says "That's nice Honey, check out my new gun", as she drags out yet another .357. I think she now has seven .357s, one 9mm, one .41Mag, two .22s, one .32S&W, and one .38S&W.

Actually she no longer cares what I buy with my AF retirement check, as long as I don't tell her what she can or cannot buy with her AF retirement check.

My wife would have said "what took you so long to buy it?".
I agonize over buying new socks. She is much more uninhibited in her spending.

Told her once that one day I would like to own a Ruger #1 in 30-06.
She said "aught six, aught six, everybody needs an aught six, thought you already had an aught six, go get you an aught six".
Turn out she just like to say "aught six".
So when ever I go hunting, she says "you taking your aught six?".

I do process serving on the side from my regular job, and use the money from that for my hobbies. My wife doesn't understand why I need more than one rifle to hunt deer, but since it doesn't come out of my regular pay check she seems okay with it. I like to refinish my stocks and she always coments on how nice they look. PS she loves venison.

My reply usually involves Zombies if the gun is black. Otherwise I'll mention an African Safari I am in the early stages of planning. The subject immediately changes and the gun is forgotten. I don't bruise very easily and heal fast enough that nobody ask questions.

When I mention a new gun to my wife, she always says, "Which one are you going to sell in order to buy a new one?" Since I am not interested in selling any that I have, I haven't bought a new gun in years.

Old Fart, I am an old fart, too. Just turned 67.

My wife doesn't complain about the toys I buy. In fact, she shoots quite well and loves to fish, especially fly fish. But her way of thinking is that you only need one boat--not three. One fly rod--not 18. One gun--not a safe full.

The object of my post is what does your wife say and what do you thinks she means, when you bring home a new gun.

BTW, the steps are getting replaced next week as well as adding a side deck on the house. She said she was paying for it. I told her I thought a deck on the side of the house that faced the street would be nice. I was thinking--We will never use the damn thing, there is no privacy. The gnats, flies, and mosquitos will eat you up, that's why I built a screened in gazebo for outdoor cooking and a 18' X 22' screened in back porch onto the house for sitting out and socializing insect free.

I just keep track of all her hair appointments, lunch with girlfriends, spa appointments, etc. Then, and only then, if I find a gun I would like(usually a cheap but nice Smith revolver), I mention what I have "noticed". She is usually fine with the fairness, as my new purchase is still less than many of her normal expenditures.

Old Fart, that's pretty much the way it is with me and mine. Not that she don't notice. She can tell me every thing I did at a party 10 years ago that embarrassed her. She knows every time she beat me at shooting bullseye targets and can pull them out to show me. She can't understand why I don't know every character's name on Swamp People, but she never realized that usually before and after the gator is shot that the guns are different makes. LOL I know I got off the subject a bit, but she has no idea what's in my closet and won't even go near it. She knows where her Bodyguard is and where my sawed off (legal) pump shotgun is and in this day and time that really counts for a lot.

Quiver, you look real close and when they give the credits at the end of the shows, they list the shooters and they are not always the stars. I always thought Liz is a hot gator hunter and she is, but she's not shooting all them gators.

Wife really does not care. I guess she figure I will sell if times get real tight and that when I pass on ,the kids will get them of they can be liquidated to cash. Never been a problem for me.Not a bad savings account if you look at it.

Sounds like at least 3 of us are dealing with similar circumstances. I assure you they know what we have. Maybe not by make and model or anything like that, but they know. It's just not an issue of interest.

when I was younger I used to hear how much did that cost, now that I have been thru several health issues all I ever hear from her is ( how much is it worth ? ) Go figure I believe she is keeping the fugures written down somewhere in case something happens to me. Jim

See, here is how you do it. When you buy something new you just kinda casualy leave it laying around. When your wife asks where it came from you simply say, " Gee, I've had that for a long time! Don't you remember? Seriously Babe, you're getting realy forgetful!" Then pray she buys it! It helps if you have a friend to back you up.

Never make the mistake of cleaning out the safe and gun closet when the wife is at home. Never line them up down the hall in a row. It makes them look like more than there are. They don't look like so many in the safe.

And when she is finished looking them over.....never say "I didn't know you could count"..........

Spirithawk' the problem here is, I don't have any suicidal friends.

If you consider the fact that my wife is about 1/3 Cherokee, 1/3 Shawnee and the rest is German, you know why it is much safer just to be up front and honest with her.

She doesn't need a gun to be armed.
