Neck tension
« on: August 20, 2011, 05:05:10 PM »
I am shooting .312 bullets in 30/30 and 308. Should I be using a.310 sizer ball. My groups have not been that great. I was shooting a ruger mini thirty today with the expander ball for the the .310 bullets with your 180 gr LCFN and the groups were great. Do you think switching to a larger expander ball could help my other guns. If so who makes these?

I like to use an expander which is only slightly smaller than the cast bullets being used, and find it almost mandatory if bullet hardness is low, say in the 12-14 bhn range.  Soft bullets aren't strong enough to expand case necks well, if the necks are thick like they are on many rifle calibers.

As for shooting oversize bullets.  I reccomend it if they will chamber smoothly, because fat bullets can't tip in the chamber / throat like undersize do.
