I like mine a lot. Same barrel length as yours. I have shot cast bullets from 105 grs up to 170 grs and they all shot well. It had to go back to the factory for 6 months right I got it to get some bugs worked out.  I was cussing Ruger for a while(6 months to be exact ;) ) but all is well now. Its a keeper.

I love the .357 Magnum. It can be loaded from powder puff gun to evil fire breathing dragon and everything in between.

lakota what problems did you have with yours curious.no problems yet.i tried the 170 grain in mine about 2 thousands to long but i have been shooting the 158 grains and 110 i have always liked the 38 and 357 easy to reload and the brass lasts a long time.

On mine the barrel/cylider gap was uneven and varied depending on what chamber on the cylinder was in firing position. Some points on the cylinder were so close that all it took was shooting a few cyinders to heat it up enough to expand the metal and bind it up completely. The repair report from Ruger was very cryptic but its been working fine ever since.

I have some .357 brass I trimmed to use those 170 grain bullets. I read an article by Bryan Peirce from Handloader magazine about using shorter brass in the .357. So far no problems. They shoot nice with 10 grains of H4227.

I also had a lee mold that threw a 125 grain round nose bullet that was too long for my sp101 with full length .357 brass. I didnt care for the bullet design anyway so I traded the mold off.

The .357 is my favorite. I even went and bought a Rossi 92 rifle to match my Blackhawk and SP101. I still have the 1st hundred peices of brass I bought to reload for my 1st .357 16 years ago. Its probably been reloaded 15 times and still going strong. The only time I lose any .357 brass is when I manage to smash it in my press.

i really don't understand why my pistol is magnetic they must not put enough chromium on nickel in there  stainless i have welded and built machinery using stainless steel that was not magnetic .but was because it had to resist acid.

Because it's not the highest grade of stainless. My guess would be 600 or possibly 400 stainless for all firearms.

Very nice. I'll bet they are good shooters too. The only place I ever saw 9.5" Barreled Ruger Blackhawk Ceneterfires was in one of Taffin's sixgun books. He had a matched pair of .357's in that barrel length. I always thought they were good looking guns.

Isnt the gun stainless a 'free machining' type? I know high grade can be machined but we cant afford spacecraft stuff over in my corner of the woods.

I'd love to have my SP101 bead blasted and get a non fluted cylinder installed. Don't know why but I love non fluted cylinders...

I know some comp shooters that trim their brass. Said you can use less charge and get same pressures. I guess that has some benefit other than saving powder???

My SP has a 3" barrel and shoots 5 shots pretty much touching at 20 feet. I love it

Doesn't trimming the brass just make it a 38 special?
I just bought a used SP101 yesterday, can't wait to get to the range today. This one is a 357, 2 inch, bobbed hammer. I have a S&W 637 "Pro Series" which is supposed to recieve extra "attention" at the factory. The DA pull on the new SP101 is much nicer.

+ 1 on Flash's post. There are many different grades of stainless steel based on the materials present in it when it is made, and the intended use. The amount of magnetism is due to the amount of carbon it has. The stainless that you welded and built machinery out of was most likely 300 series stainless, which has 0% carbon. I bet you remember how hard it was to deburr, and it is tough as you know what to machine. It is used in the food industry and corrosion resistance products. Most all stainless firearms are made from 400 series or a higher series(and cheap cooking products too) as it is much easier to machine, heat-treat, and cast. The more carbon present in the SS the stonger the magnet will stick. On the SS firearms I've owned, a magnet would stick, but very lightly, not as strong as it would to mild carbon steel. Unfornunately, the amount of carbon present will also cause it to rust, but it is still far more corrosion resistant than blued steel. If you've ever shot black powder in a stainless muzzleloader and got lazy on cleaning it, you will find out real quick that it will indeed rust.(don't ask me how I know  ::);)

Same on rusting of a grip frame under the wood panels on a S&W 624; at least it wasnt as visible or as bitter as chamber/barrel rusting  :'( . It cleaned up decently, but my friend didnt keep it another year before trading off.
