taurus 44mag.......
« on: August 21, 2011, 12:41:28 PM »
Have been looking around at short barrel .44's. Really like the looks of the ruger alaskan, but do not like the price tag. Local gunshop had the taurus .44 ultra light for $550 and it looks real nice. Anyone have the ultra light or even just a 4" or shorter .44 mag taurus? The gun will mainly be a just in case gun that I will take out with me while deer hunting. No overly dangerous game here in NY but bears are not completely uncommon. I realize this gun isnt a "hunting revolver" but is it capable of say hitting a softball at 25yards? I have read reports that these guns do not group at all. Any information from people who actually own them would be great. thanks!

I have a Taurus Tracker 44. It is fun to shoot with 44 Special loads, but punishing with full power magnum loads. It is listed as a 4" barrel, but the last inch is freebored and ported. Light enough to carry all day, but I don't think it would hold up to a steady diet of full power loads.

I don't own the Taurus you are looking at, but my past experience with four different models of the brand was not good.  Seems when they get one right, its good to go, but often they don't.  For the same price, you can find a clean used S&W 4 inch 629 that will do what you want in an accurate and reliable platform, with outstanding customer service available, if ever needed.

I had the ruger Alaskan. It did ok, but the 629 smith is the way to go. Several of my friends have owned the Taurus revolvers and no one was happy with them. I'm sure there are some good ones out there, but out of the 7-8 that I have personaly used and that have been owned by friends, none were very good.

I wanted a 44 Spl. but couldn't find a S&W 696 that didn't cost a fortune.  So I got a Tracker.  After reaming the cylinder throats to get them in line with the bore diameter I'm very happy with the weapon.  Wish I could say the same for Taurus' CS...  >:(

I have a Taurus 44 SS and am very happy with it.  It shoots better than I can at 50 yards as proven by others.  Nothing against S&W but in my book the newer Taurus' are equal.

Only issue I have had with my 4" Tracker is the cylinder release would come loose, locktite fixed that.  It groups as well as I shoot at 25 yds, light to carry all day and the porting makes it easier to shoot.  It's not one I bought to shoot a lot, but to carry a lot.  I would get another based on my experience.  DP

Of the four M44s myself and friends have owned, with 6" barrels, they were trouble-free, and would shoot 3" or less at 25 yards.   I also own a M 29 S&W, and the blued Tauri have a much nicer polish and blue.   I would add that both my friend's and my Python  needed repair while still in almost new condition.  None of my (many?) S&Ws ever needed repair while I owned them, even the 90 year old ones.

I have an m444 ultralite that I have run loads through that would make a S&W cry.  And it still keeps kickin. (and very hard)  ;)  Dont know about the tracker ultra lite 44, but the 444, on the raging bull frame is no joke.
