200 grain in 30-06 for buffalo

my son was donated a buffalo hunt, some of you may have my other post, with lots of help and parts we have converted his handi to a thumbhole stock with a m-16 vertical foregrip he can hold, my current problem is loads for a 200 grain hot cor, ive tried 4895 from min to max and varget the same best groups are 4'' at 100 yards, way off for ar ifle that would shoot under 1'' with 150 nos BT any ideas, other post suggested 200 grain bullet min for buffalo,

I'm not an expert reloader, but with a 1-10 twist, seems better for a 180 gr. bullet.  Important factor would be that it's one that can take a bone without fragmenting and get good penetration.  I'd think one of the bullets below would be acceptable.  I've started reloading 30-40 Krag and 7.5x55 Swiss with Hornady interlock 180 grainers:

I haven't shot buffalo though, but I'd think any of the above would have no issue with penetration or weight retention from what I've researched.  Maybe someone who's shot buffalo can chime in too.  I do know the 180 SP's are very accurate in tests so far, but Round nose tend to deal with bone better in some cases.

I don't know that a 200 gr bullet would be necessary, but you might try some 4831 with that heavy bullet.
 Dropping down to a 190-180 or even a good 165 gr bullet and going with a powder like H414 (my rifles favorite) or 4350 may proove a better combination in your setup.

I'd look at a 180 grain Barnes copper solid.  Plenty of penetration with good expansion.  Trophy Bondeds are another bullet with a great reputation on big game.

Never reloaded with 414 but considered it for my 303 British 180 grain RN, may try RN 180 grain

in the 06, i never loaded RN bullets what would be the OAL as the olgive would be different. Any suggestions on starting load with 414,

Hi....I been a on a few buffalo/bison hunts.  A 30/06 with a good, well constructed bullet will work just fine.  I was in on a bison hunt with a friend and he used a savage edge in 06 and 180gr factory cup and core bullet...nothing fancy.  Took 3 shots....2 quick and finisher.  Really....a 200gr is not necessary.

You need slow burning powders for the 200 gr bullets. Start with one of the 4350 powders.

My H&R Ultra Comp shoots the 200gr Nosler Partition on top of RL22 excellent at 100yds.  ;)

I have loaded the 200 gr Speer SP with H-4831 years ago. This load worked well to very well in several rifles.

My Ruger #1-A in 30-06 shoots great with RL-22 and the 208 grain Hornady A-max bullet. I also have a Marlin XL-7 in 30-06 that is very accurate with RL-22 and 180 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips.
If you want to shoot heavy bullets in the '06 I highly recommend trying Reloader 22 powder.

Like others have said - go with a slower powder: 4350, IMR 4831, or Rx 19 or Rx 22 with a 180 or 200 gr bullet.  I mostly use IMR 4350 with 180 partitions in my 30-06. Haven't shot a bison with the '06 but I'm sure it'll do the job. I wouldn't go over 200 gr for the bullet.

Try Retumbo.  It is designed specifically for heavy bullets and accuracy has always been superb.  You might also consider having the seating depth as long as possible to squeeze a bit more powder in the case.

You might get good accuracy out of Retumbo in a 30-06 but you will not get very much velocity. It is too slow burning for the 30-06.
