Sportster - Anybody ever shortened the barrel on one to 16"
« on: August 22, 2011, 07:36:38 AM »
I have a 22lr sportster that isn't getting used. I thought it might be neat to shorten the barrel to 16.25 and start squirrel hunting with it.

Anybody ever chopped one off and if so, can you post a picture of it..

Maybe slightly off, but thought I'd quip in that 22's are still plenty accurate from the 16".  I have my little Marlin Papoose which I bought in the 80's and it's still very accurate out to 50 anyway.  I've gotten a lot of small game with it and used it in my survival training days as it was easy to carry.  I would think similar to cutting any barrel off, getting it recrowned correctly will be the biggest controller of performance.  ;)

I don't have ( yet ) a shorty .22, but I do have a 16 1/2" .44 mag. You will not loose anyvelocity fromthe shorter barrel, and in fact, may well gain a few fps, as the .22 long rifle round optimizes in about 14", according to much that I have read. Much longer, and velocity is lost due to bullet friction in longer barrel.
Accuracy should not be affected for the worse, and may in fact be better in the short barrel. The sportster uses a somewhat light barrel, and cutting it shorter may well tame down what little harmonics it has. I assume you are going to scope it?? If you decide to use open sites, and go through the trouble of putting on a proper height front site, you may not be able to shoot it as accurately as open sites on a full-lenght barrel, due to sight radius. But that has to do to shooters ability, not weapons accuracy.
On my shorty, I used the synthetic forearm that is held in place by a round knob, about the size of a quarter or so. I think it is the "survivor" forarm. It makes it a tool-less, quick job of taking it down, and carrying it in a very compact case. In addition, the sling stud is on the exteme front, so when it is slung over the shoulder, very little barrel protrudes upward, making it pretty much snag-free.

The sights are already so close together on my Sportster barrel that it almost looks like a long barreled pistol and shoots really well as is. The rifle is already off balance for me, even with the CR carbine wood, but I tend to like some muzzle heaviness. Unless I just had to fit it into a certain small length case (because?) I wouldnt cut one down, its already way shorter than any of my take down cases.

Heck if you want to shorten it .  Do it.  There is handi's on here in jus about every centerfire caliber shortened to 16.5"  The Encores get used and shot alot in all rifles calibers in 15" bbls .  At the least 22LR wont kill your ears after  a shot or 2.  You wont lose nothing in ballistics.  Be sure to post pics when your done with it.  Bet it would carry like a dream  ;D  The only better caliber would be a 22 Mag or 32 S+W long   Todd/3leg

I was thinking of cutting mine back to 16".  It has a youth buttstock on it so I have to check the OAL to make sure it is legal. I think this would be a neat compact gun.

With 16.5" and a compact stock, it is G2G.  ;)
