Martin Luther King memorial
« on: August 23, 2011, 06:46:24 AM »
Martin Luther King is one of the great Americans and he deserves a prominent memorial in his honor.

But that new memorial is Ug-Lee! My first impression was that it looked like soviet-era statues of Lenin and Stalin. Second impression is that it's a bad likeness, in fact it doesn't look like him at all and is very unflattering.
Third impression is that you can build a 20 story office building of good quality in most large American cities for about $50 million. Why did this thing have to cost $120 million? Who got payed off?

Bottom line is that I'm glad he got a memorial. I just wish the design was better.

It's a very bad likeness.  I wouldn't have been able to guess who it was.

I disagree with both of you. It's not suppose to be a picture of the guy.....it's suppose to be a carving of his likeness. And that...it is.

If anything it looks out of place. It may have looked better in one of the places where he preached his ideas.

I haven't seen it.
If it looks like Lenin or Stalin it is appropriate since the Civil Rights movement received financial support from the Soviet Union.

Even better, it was apparently made in China... >:( http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/8715823/Martin-Luther-King-memorial-made-in-China.html

I guess they saved $8 million (on a total $120 million project) by having it made in China!  :o http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr._National_Memorial

Are you saying that everything the Ruskie's did was wrong?  Besides, in the 60's what rich white guy was gonna fund it?

You got that right.  The country is on the brink of financial ruen and we spend $120 mil. of tax payers money on yet another memorial for MILK.   If the blacks feel that he is so important let them pay for the statue from part of their welfare checks.   I know this is not PC but that 's the way I feel about it.  Seems like half the streets, buildings, etc. in and around the Charlotte area are named after MLK to the point that it is ridiculous.

I think it was mostly paid for by donations, so sayeth the news. One thing that is also claimed in the news is that the King family, through their intellectual property management company, got over $800,000 in "management fees" and in intellectual property sales. In other words, they sold the words that appear on the statue.

Davemuzz I really have a hard time believing any thing in that article! It says 61% are white and 33% are black. So hispanics, asians, native americans, pacific islanders, and all other groups only make up 6% of welfare recipents? Also whites non hispanic are 66% of the population while blacks are 13% so how does that go for welfare per capita? Just a little math makes me wonder about the truth of your link.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

The article came from Ebony magazine what do you expect? It's a magazine for and about black folks. ;)
Here's a question for ya... out of the 61% of whites who are supposedly on welfare how many of them are white women with half black kids? Here's an even better question for ya... out of the white women with half black kids how many of the black "fathers" are there to support the kids? Let's see if Ebony magazine will do a poll on that. ;) ::)  I know one thing for fact... I'm sick of working to support 'em.
I've got the perfect example of what I'm saying. I know a woman who has 5 kids... 3 are white and 2 are half black. She is in a relationship with the "father" of the 2 mixed kids. She lives in "welfare housing", collects welfare money and food stamps, has welfare health care, etc... the whole 9 yards paid for by hard working taxpayers. What does her "baby daddy" do for a living?? You guessed it... he slings drugs, wears Timberland boots, drives a Lexus and sits on his lazy backside reaping the benefits of decent peoples hard work.
Don't think this is an isolated case either... it's more common than people think and it's pure BS plain and simple.
It's sickening. >:(

When I worked in the professional world, I knew a white tax professional who did hundreds of corporate and individual tax returns for wealthy white men. He stated that the poor welfare people thought they got the best of the Federal Government. If they actually would get an education, and make big money, they would see that the wealthy professionals, no matter what color, knew how to "bend the laws" to make big money. Welfare money was just crumbs that fell to the floor compared to what he did.

I have had two children work at grocery stores.  They said you would be surprised as to how many pay for their groceries with food stamps and the put them in Caddies and Lincolns, newer models also.  Food stamps cover bottled water, soft drinks, potato chips, and candy.  I think these should not be included and at least cut back about 10%.  They can use tap water, Koolaid, and make their own potato chips or fries from potatoes.  Candy is not necessary, they can eat fruit.  Cookies should also not be covered.  Only good nurishing food.  Also, require drug testing to get them or welfare money.  The women should have their tubes tied if they have more than 2 kids and are on welfare.  No more.  They can be clamped off and it is reversable if they get off the welfare plantation and can afford more.

Back to the memorial, I don't like the way they have his arms folded.  Should have been open armed, more friendly looking.
